Wheely good news for Randwick City’s youngest easy riders; South Maroubra car park has been added to Clovelly Beach car park and Chifley Reserve car park as a third pop-up pedal park this June, July and August.

Mayor Dylan Parker will officially launch the winter riding, scooting and skating season at 3.30pm on Thursday 9 June at South Maroubra car park.

All three car parks will create a contained space for kids and families to practise bike riding, scooter and skate board skills and encourage outside play. The pedal parks will include ramps and jumps to help kids improve their two- and four-wheeled skills.

“This idea has had such great community support from the outset and it’s wonderful to be able to build on it and expand the pedal parks so more kids can take part in the time-tested fun of riding a bike or skateboard with your friends,” said Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker.

Pop up pedal parks have been operating in Randwick since June 2020 when Council reserved parts of Clovelly Beach car park and Chifley Reserve car park as spaces for kids to exercise during lockdown when beaches were closed and community sports on hiatus.

In November 2020, Council formally proposed to repeat the exercise each winter, creating safe and accessible spaces for local families to use for outdoor recreation such as bike riding, scooter riding and ball games.

In 2021 the skill-building ramps and tunnels were added to help children learn new skills and increase their confidence and the winter season was extended until October 1, 2021, to allow families space to enjoy the outdoors at the height of home schooling.
