Families, teenagers and local sports lovers will soon have a brand-new place to stay active, with Randwick City Council set to deliver a modern multi-purpose sports court at Baker Park in Coogee.
Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with the new community facility scheduled to open before the end of the year.
Located at Baker Park, 2R Carr Street, Coogee, the project has been designed to encourage casual recreation, improve opportunities for outdoor exercise and create a welcoming space where people of all ages can enjoy sport together.
Designed with the Community
The new court has been shaped by extensive community consultation.
During 2025, Randwick City Council sought feedback from local residents and hosted a design workshop with students from a nearby high school to better understand what young people wanted from the space.
Three clear priorities emerged:
- More opportunities for casual sport and shooting hoops.
- Facilities that support a variety of activities.
- A welcoming space that can be enjoyed by the whole community.
That feedback has been incorporated into the final design, ensuring the court is flexible enough to cater for different sports and age groups throughout the day.
A Space for More Than Just Basketball
Rather than focusing on a single sport, the new facility has been designed as a true multi-purpose recreation space.
Basketball Hoops
Multiple basketball hoops with backboards will be installed back-to-back, allowing several games or practice sessions to take place simultaneously. This helps reduce waiting times and makes the court more accessible during busy periods.
Netball Hoop
A dedicated netball hoop with court markings will provide opportunities for casual shooting practice and skill development. The addition supports greater participation across the community, particularly encouraging women and girls to enjoy the space.
Pickleball Courts
Responding to growing community interest, the court will include line markings for two full-size pickleball courts. Pickleball continues to be one of Australia’s fastest-growing sports, offering a fun, social activity suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities.
Rebound Wall with Public Art
One of the standout features will be a 7-metre-long, 2.5-metre-high rebound wall, designed for practising passing, ball control and other sporting skills.
The wall will also become part of Randwick City Council’s First Coat mural program, combining sport with public art to create an attractive community space.
Bench Seating
New seating will provide a comfortable place for families, friends and spectators to relax, watch the action or simply enjoy the park.
Encouraging Active Lifestyles
Baker Park has long been a popular neighbourhood destination for recreation and socialising. The addition of a purpose-built multi-purpose court will give local residents even more opportunities to stay active without needing to join organised competitions or clubs.
Whether it’s a quick basketball shoot-around after school, a friendly pickleball match, netball practice or simply enjoying time outdoors with family and friends, the new facility aims to create a space that everyone can enjoy.
With construction set to commence in late 2026 and completion expected by the end of 2026, the new Baker Park multi-purpose court will become another valuable addition to Coogee’s growing network of community recreation spaces.
