Looking for something different to do with the family this weekend? Head to La Perouse for Sea Place on Country, a free two-night cultural event celebrating the deep connection First Nations people have with Sea Country through art, storytelling, music, film and community.
Taking place on Friday 5 June and Saturday 6 June, the La Perouse Headland will come alive after dark with stunning digital projections, live performances, outdoor cinema, museum exhibitions and delicious food by the sea.
Visitors are encouraged to rug up, bring a torch and enjoy a memorable evening under the stars while exploring the rich culture and stories of the La Perouse Aboriginal community.
A Spectacular Light Display on the Headland
One of the highlights of the event is a major artwork projection by acclaimed artist Shane Youngberry, which will transform the historic Macquarie Watchtower into a striking illuminated landmark visible across the headland.
The large-scale projection celebrates creativity, culture and connection to Country while creating a stunning backdrop for the evening’s festivities.
Outdoor Screening of The Mullet Run
Families and visitors can gather on the museum lawn to watch outdoor screenings of the documentary The Mullet Run, a film that explores the cultural significance of the annual mullet migration and its importance to coastal Aboriginal communities.
The screenings offer an opportunity to come together and share stories of culture, community and connection to the ocean.
New Exhibitions Launch at La Perouse Museum
The event also marks the opening of three exciting new exhibitions at the La Perouse Museum.
LA+ 001
Created by Dr Peter McKenzie and Brenda Croft, this powerful exhibition showcases a collection of photographic works connected to the La Perouse Aboriginal Community.
Drawing from more than six decades of imagery, the exhibition captures community life while celebrating the enduring connection of Dharawal women and girls to Country and culture.
Contaminated: Site 3
Artist Norton Fredericks combines art and science to explore the impact of environmental contamination on land, waterways and communities. The exhibition examines how toxins affect both the environment and human health through innovative site-specific works.
Edge of the Earth
Artist Anna Mould explores early European ideas about the mysterious southern continent once known as Terra Australis Incognita – the “Unknown Southern Land” that existed in the imagination long before Australia was mapped.
