My name is Viyanna, and I am a proud mum to an energetic 2-year-old boy named Leo. My husband Michael is a veterinarian, and our story began when I brought my giant dog, Quincy, to his clinic. Professionally, I am a zoologist with extensive experience working across Africa, South America, and Australia. For nine years, I contributed to wildlife reintroductions into National Parks through my role at an NGO, a career that has been both fulfilling and inspiring.

Becoming a mother brought a profound shift in my lifestyle and priorities. While I cherished my new role, I also found it to be a challenging and, at times, isolating journey. As a dancer, I sought a way to integrate movement into my life with my baby, which sparked the creation of my business, Groove and Grow.

Groove and Grow offers a unique class called Baby Dance Club™, designed for parents and their babies in carriers. The class combines movement, music, and bonding to help parents connect with babies while fostering a sense of community. It’s a space where parents can come together, share experiences, and enjoy the benefits of movement and music in a supportive environment.

As a family, we are passionate about animals and community. I love anything that brings us to the beach and water. The ocean is my sanctuary, and I love sharing this with my son.

Where and how long have you lived in Sydney’s east?

I have lived in the eastern suburbs on and off for 25 years, primarily in Coogee but also in Randwick.

Three words that describe what it’s like to live in the eastern suburbs?

Coastal, Beautiful, Vibrant

How many children?

We have one child. A two-year-old boy.

Favourite Park?

My favourite park is Centennial Park. I love walking around the lakes and showing all the animals to my son. I especially enjoy dusk, when the Corellas come in to nest, and the bats swoop into the lakes to drink water and search for food. I also love the Wild Play area, especially during summer.

Favourite Beach?

I love Coogee during autumn and winter, especially the Ladies Baths. However, during the busier summer months, I prefer Malabar or Maroubra. For ocean swimming Coogee Beach, Malabar or Wylie’s Baths.

Favourite kids friendly cafe?

The Homestead Café is our favourite kid-friendly café. There’s lots of space for kids to run around, and it’s easy to access for a walk afterwards.

Favourite Coffee Spot?

A takeaway coffee from Coffee Room at Coogee, then sitting by the water at the south end.

Favourite date night place?

Our favourite date night place is Bar Milano at Maroubra Beach. Yummy margaritas and delicious pasta.

Where in the east have you yet to explore and would like to go?

I haven’t had the chance to explore Rose Bay and Double Bay, but I’ve heard the library there is amazing. Also, I would like to go on more ocean and nature walks in the area

What would you like to see improve in the eastern suburbs?

I would like to see more events like the Spot Festival that was held every Thursday. Also, a food market like the ones in Ramsgate would be great—somewhere to get fresh local produce, not just expensive treats.

Favourite Local Shop?

For food, Harris Farms Markets at Randwick and the Grumpy Baker at Maroubra for bread.

Favourite wet weather location?

In the rain, I like Wylies Baths. You have shelter, a café, and the chance to watch the storms and rain.

Favourite Local family Weekend Activity?

My favourite weekend activity is an early morning beach trip, either to Mahon Pools or Wylies Baths for a swim and so my son can look for crabs. Then, we head to a local café for brunch.

Work or SAHM?

I am working four days per week, and my husband and I each spend a weekday at home with our son.

Motherly advice?

  1. Don’t allow fear of judgment to guide your mothering. Instead, follow your instincts and let your heart lead.
  2. Being a mother can make you feel more love than you ever imagined, while also being incredibly difficult. It’s okay to feel two things at once. Don’t dismiss the difficulty—it’s okay to feel this. It doesn’t make you a bad mum.
