A staircase on the Coastal Walkway providing access to Lurline Bay and connecting South Coogee to Maroubra has reopened today, 1 March 2023, almost nine months after storms forced its closure.

Large cracks appeared in the concrete staircase and the supporting brick piers collapsed in June last year after huge storms lashed the coast.

Randwick Council was forced to close the staircase due to safety concerns while engineers assessed the damage and developed remediation plans.

“I’m very pleased that this staircase has been repaired, made safe and is now open again for public use,” Mayor Dylan Parker said.

“Lurline Bay is a beautiful coastal environment and is well used by local residents. It forms part of our stunning Coastal Walkway which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sydney.”

Randwick Council is developing longer term plans for a cantilevered boardwalk around Lurline Bay and for a public access way between Cuzco Street and Seaside Parade as part of continuing the Coastal Walkway along the coast.
