Starting Kindergarten is a big step for little learners—and their parents. From making friends to feeling comfortable in a classroom, there is plenty to discover before that first school morning.

To help families prepare, St Margaret Mary’s Primary School in Randwick North is welcoming children and their parents to its free weekly Playgroup and School Readiness Program.

Held every Friday from 9am during term, the program brings together play, teacher-led activities and opportunities to connect with other local families. It’s a welcoming introduction to school life, giving children time to explore, join in and build confidence.

Who can join?

The program is designed for children aged four and older who will start Kindergarten in 2027 or 2028.

For families beginning to think about primary school, it offers an opportunity to become familiar with the school environment while enjoying activities together.

Play, discover and learn this Term 4

Each session combines free play with structured learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity and connection. This term’s activities include:

  • Families and identity: Children explore what makes them unique, share family stories and develop a sense of belonging.
  • Colours, stories and culture: Art and storytelling activities include exploring The Rainbow Serpent and learning about Indigenous culture.
  • STEM and robotics: Friendly Bee-Bots introduce children to early coding, sequencing and problem-solving through hands-on play.
  • Christmas creativity: Festive crafts and seasonal activities bring a cheerful finish to the school year.

Children also receive a take-home activity after each session, giving families something to explore together and a way to continue the learning at home.

A chance for parents to connect, too

Preparing for school is also an opportunity to build your local community. While children play and learn, parents can meet other families approaching the same milestone, share experiences and make connections ahead of Kindergarten.

Whether your child is eager to explore a classroom or needs a little time to feel comfortable, the program offers a gentle way to start getting acquainted with school life.
