Relaxed Neutral Nursery Vibes

Interior stylist Fiona Gould shares her tips for creating a calming nursery.

Creating a room for my new baby boy was a process that gave me so much joy. Knowing we would be spending hours in here together (at all hours of the day and night!) meant I wanted to create a really calming space that encouraged relaxation and happy vibes. Here’s a few of my tips for styling your own nursery so that it feels extra soft and inviting for you and your bub.

Start with your key furniture pieces – if you are keeping your walls white I love to go with timber pieces to add some warmth and contrast. A timber cot and dresser in similar wood tones really helped to cozy up this space. I love this dresser from Icon by Design, the mid-century vibe added to the slightly retro surfer theme I chose and paired well with this cot from Baby Bunting.

Nurseries should feel ultra soft and gentle, and the best way to give this feel is by adding layers of various soft texture. Sheer curtains over a window makes such a huge difference and are lovely during the day when the light trickles in. If you have white walls, try a warm natural colour here rather than a cool white, like these from Freedom Furniture. A soft linen pendant light is another lovely way to introduce the same linen texture too.

A cosy rug underfoot softens the space even further and doubles as a perfect play mat. I steer clear of high pile wool rugs in spaces like this as they can shed a little, instead I like a synthetic blend like this one from Freedom Furniture which will also be durable against stains.

A big upholstered armchair is an ideal reading/cuddle nook and I love the soft cosy texture of boucle fabric in a nursery. Be sure to look for a chair with arms to support you during those late night feeds like this chair from James Lane Furniture. I loved the simplicity of this side table also from James Lane Furniture.

When it comes to the colour palette, I recommend picking 1-2 colours and sticking with them, styling them with various neutral tones from white through to more earthy neutrals to ground the look. The soft blue and neutral tones in this room complimented the timber pieces so beautifully in this space. If I had chosen a couple more colours, it may have felt a little too busy and less peaceful. The subtle blue cushion pop from Sheridan Outlet, and the soft yellow blanket and blue sheet set from Adairs really pulled the look together for me.

A quirky rattan tree decoration from Adairs and cute artwork from Oz Design Furniture added to the surfer theme in a subtle way and tied the whole look together. The dresser was styled with simple pieces, a vase from BoConcept, a cute fake camera toy from Freedom Furniture and abacus from Adairs.

I hope this has inspired you to experiment with some different textures and materials in your own space and create a dreamy nursery that you’ll enjoy for years to come.
