Each Monday we meet a local eastern suburb mum, this week meet Amy Goller!
Where and how long have you lived in Sydney’s east:
I have been lucky enough to have lived in the Eastern Suburbs since I was born in 1980. I grew up in Coogee and spent my younger years as a local visiting every eastern suburb beach and went to School at St. Catherine’s in Waverley. I feel so privileged that I get to call the Eastern Suburbs my home, to this day. So grateful.
But I have travelled and lived abroad and interstate. Two years out of university I moved to Cairns and worked with the PCYC in Cape York working with
at risk indigenous youth. It was one of the most rewarding and eye-opening experiences that I will treasure. After that, I met my gorgeous hubbie in
Sydney and within a year of meeting we were moving to Perth together for his work. We spent two years there. Gorgeous beaches, a sleepy CBD (when I
arrived there was NO trading on a Sunday in Perth’s CBD: I was more than a little shocked), gorgeous cafes, and a not too distant drive to Margaret
River and the wineries (we learnt a lot about wine but probably consumed more than we learned: wink wink).
I learnt to slow down and appreciate a slower pace of life, something that I find hard to do in Sydney. But at the end of the day, we wanted to be close
to family and so we moved back to the Eastern Suburbs, ENGAGED!
How many children:
Two gorgeous girls. 18months apart. Both Premies. Both of them a blessing.
Favourite Park:
Centennial Park. Running with a pram. Picnics under the old trees. Birthday parties. Sport. Horse riding. Pony rides. Catching tadpoles. Falling in catching
tadpoles. Feeding the ducks. Grabbing a coffee. Taking my eldest to the playground. Bike Tracks and Roller Blades (Do roller blades still exist? Hahaha).
FAMILY. MEMORIES. LOVE.
Favourite Beach:
Clovelly! Hands down. Its gorgeous on the beach for the little ones to wade in the shallow waters and not so crowded like Bondi. Its the perfect beach
to snorkel with your little ones or do laps of, while your partner watched the little ones. There is a cafe, a playground and a carpark so close by.
With kids, this ticks all my boxes. My hubbie and I spent a lot of time to wards the end of my pregnancy (when I felt like a beached whale) in the
sun towards the end of my pregnancy at ‘cloey’ beach, and its no surprise my eldest daughters name is Chloe.
Favourite kid friendly cafe:
I would have to say the Coogee Pavillion. With a massive play area out the back on the ground floor, lounges and entertainment for all ages (Plus comfy
lounges for mums and dads to have an early morning coffee or two or a glass of wine, its perfect! Everyone adult that is there, knows its a section
for kids and thus, there are no stares or stress when your little one cries too loud or you need to breastfeed etc. I love it there and am a local.
Favourite Coffee Spot:
I would have to say the Shuk Cafe at North Bondi. Another great cafe, with great food, green tea and coffee (Hallelujah). If you are a mum, you will
understand the importance of some caffeine every now and then (wink wink). Plus, they also have an outdoor area for the little ones to play. It’s
a small space but it provides some entertainment for toddlers and gives you a little rest & an outlet for active toddlers. Lets face it, how
long can we really expect a toddler to sit in a high chair? HaHaHa
Favourite date night place:
Date night? What’s a date night? Just joking. Since we have #2under2, Sebastian and I are more than happy to head to Coogee for dinner & a wine
(Farinha is amazing for Italian food) and then head to the cinema at Bondi Junction. Choosing the film is always the trickiest part….. I’m
not into Star Wars & Sebastian is not into chick flicks…. HAHAHA
Favourite Mother’s Group Location:
Des Renford Aquatic Centre. Great location for a coffee and to splash around with your little ones, inside or out. So its great, rain, hail or shine!
Work or SAHM:
I’m a SAHM who works. I am the creative director and owner of My Tiny Wardrobe. I use the business to encourage other mums to work from home if they
can, and provide them with a platform to sell their designs. I am currently collaborating with women designers who are raising children across
Australia. It is a collection of working mummy designers, photographers, and suppliers, all woven together to empower women through small business.
Life is too short to not chase your dreams! Yes, I am speaking to you, the one who is reading this article. I feel that @mytinywardrobesydney with
the support of other women might lead to some mums setting aside their stilettos if they choose and continue to pursue their dreams of working
from home. I want YOU to email me, Facebook me, Instagram me, tweet me (joking, I don’t do twitter). Seriously before I launched this business
I thought Facebook was “trending”. I had no idea. What a learning curve I have loved riding the wave of.
If you LOVE Photography or Love Marketing or you LOVE TO DESIGN, SEW, PRINT, STITCH and would love to do that while your little ones play under your
desk at home, it’s possible.
In creating this brand, I stepped out of the corporate world to design a future for myself and my family, and other mums who would join this collection
of creatives, all working from home! I design clothes for “All the places they’ll go and adventures they’ll have”.
Motherly advice:
There’s so much to be said and most of it will sound cliche. Slow down. Soak it up. so and so on. All those things are true. The dishes can wait. Snuggle
instead. Sleep instead. Shower instead:)
But if I was going to try and say something that maybe hasn’t been said yet, I guess it would be, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
I think as mums, we try to do it all. Juggle it all. Act tough. Be strong. Serve everyone except ourselves. And that’s kind of what motherhood is.
But don’t say no when someone offers to mop your kitchen floor. Or bring you a meal. If the only reason you’re saying no is because you believe
you should be able to do it all yourself. Don’t be too proud to reach out on the bad days. Whether it’s just to cry and vent, or to ask that friend
or sibling or parent to come carry some of the weight with you. We CAN do it alone. But I think we do it BETTER together.
