This week we are chatting with Cintia De la Torres, who not only works in the family owned cafe, The North End Café in Maroubra. She also works as a Chemical Engineer in the Future Energy space focused on Hydrogen generation and storage.
Where and how long have you lived in Sydney’s east?
I’ve been living in Australia and in Maroubra for 15 years.
Three words that describe what it’s like to live in the eastern suburbs?
Beach, Surf and Sun (for me is a lifestyle).
How many children?
I have 2 children, Melina is 12 and Marvin is 10.
Favourite Park?
Heffron Park, because there are so many different environments in one place to cater for all children ages.
Favourite Beach:
Maroubra.
Favourite kid friendly cafe?
The North End Café, we are kids and pets friendly, we have a wonderful garden at the rear of our café with a pond and fishes.
Favourite Coffee Spot?
I would love to say my café again, The North End, but also love Kurtosh in Randwick.
Favourite date night place:
The Spot, we can enjoy a nice meal, drinks, great food and movies. Again I am all for variety within one place.
Where in the east have you yet to explore and would like to ?
Vaucluse and Watsons Bay, I am frighten about the idea of the traffic and parking around these areas that I have hardly taken time to explore this part of the eastern suburb
What would you like to see improve in the eastern suburbs?
Maroubra Brach, I feel we are the poor cousin in the eastern suburbs and would love to see more investments and improvements on our local facilities particularly our promenade and our bathroom amenities.
Favourite Local Shop?
Olive & Grain is a small Maroubra local delicatessen offering some great pastries, cheeses and meats. The owners are lovely and always keen on helping you.
Favourite wet weather location?
On rainy days one of our favourites places is the Entertainment Quarter. There we can have a good meal, some great coffee and entertainment f0r both adults and kids, movies, monkey mania, bowling, painting. Once again you can see how I am all for multiple choices in one location.
Favourite Local family Weekend Activity?
Surfing. When weather and surf conditions allow, we love going for a paddle out with kids and snorkelling.
Work or SAHM? WORKING Mum?
I am a Chemical Engineer currently working in the Future Energy space focused on Hydrogen generation and storage. Just over a year ago I entered into a new venture which is to own and run a café in Maroubra Beach, The North End Café, alongside my partner and in laws (brother and sister in law). So additionally, to my full-time work as an engineer I also do all the admin work for our café and hands on deck working on the weekends. It is absolutely rewarding serving our customers and community and see people coming back because they love what we do.
Motherly advice?
Doesn’t matter the stage of your life, career or kids age, you need to keep heads up and keep going despite of the challenges life trough at you. Always believe you are doing your best for you and your family. We do not always get it right, but perseverance and positive attitude had been key to me and my family.
