Ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes at Australia’s most famous beach? This October, families have a chance to discover the fascinating history, incredible rescues and surprising secrets of Bondi’s world-famous lifeguards — and best of all, it’s completely free!

If your family loves Bondi Beach, enjoys watching the lifeguards in action or is simply looking for something different to do, Bondi Lifeguards: Stories from the Vault is a fascinating exhibition at Bondi Pavilion from 28 October to 1 November 2026.

More Than Just Red and Yellow Uniforms!

We all recognise the Bondi lifeguards keeping swimmers safe at one of the world’s most famous beaches. But have you ever wondered what lifeguarding was like 100 years ago?

This special exhibition takes visitors on a journey through more than a century of Bondi Beach history, revealing some of the unusual objects, memorable characters and remarkable stories behind the people who have watched over generations of beachgoers.

Families can discover:

  • Original lifeguard uniforms and historical photographs.
  • Old scrapbooks filled with fascinating newspaper clippings.
  • Duty rosters showing how lifeguards worked in years gone by.
  • A bronze shark warning bell dating back to the 1920s.
  • Curious historical objects, including a confiscation book.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to show the kids how much Bondi Beach has changed — and how some things, like keeping swimmers safe, have always mattered.

Hear Incredible Stories from a Real Bondi Lifeguard

One of the highlights is the chance to hear from Lawrie Williams, a long-serving professional Bondi lifeguard known as the Bondi Historian.

During daily local history talks at 11am, Lawrie shares his personal experiences and takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Bondi’s past.

Expect stories about dramatic rescues, sharks, famous beach characters and the changing rules of beach life.

Discover the extraordinary story of Bondi’s Black Sunday mass rescue, hear about the days when bikinis were banned from the beach, and learn how professional lifeguarding has evolved over 113 years.

For curious kids and adults alike, it’s a chance to discover that the real stories of Bondi Beach can be just as fascinating as anything seen on television.

Make It a Family Day Out at Bondi

Why not combine a visit to the exhibition with a walk along Bondi Beach, a coffee or lunch nearby, and some time enjoying the beautiful coastline?

It’s an easy way to add something educational and entertaining to a family outing without spending a cent on admission.
