Road safety works get green light after $11.5 million grant

The most dangerous local street intersection in Randwick City is set for a safety overhaul after Randwick City Council secured state government funding for safety upgrades across the City. Between 2019 and 2024 there were 26 collisions at the southern intersection of Anzac Parade and Franklin Street, located near the Malabar town centre, injuring 27 people – more than any other local road in Randwick City. The $4.7 million Transport for NSW grant will fund the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection. All Randwick City beaches reopen for swimming in time for the weekend

Coogee, Clovelly, Maroubra, Malabar and Gordons Bay beaches will reopen to the public from Saturday 19 October 2024. The five beaches, located in the Randwick City Council Local Government Area, were closed to the public during the week after thousands of ball-shaped tar debris was found. Transport for NSW Maritime today issued the all-clear for beaches to reopen saying the ball-shaped debris is not highly toxic to humans. Early morning inspections conducted today by Council’s Environmental Health Officers identified small quantities of debris still being washed ashore, much less than first appeared on Tuesday. Coogee Beach closed after unknown debris found washed ashore

Sydney’s Coogee Beach is closed until further notice after Randwick Council Lifeguards this afternoon, Tuesday 15 October, discovered mysterious, black, ball-shaped debris washed along the length of the beach. Randwick City Council environmental officers have collected samples for testing and reported the incident to the EPA and Beachwatch NSW. Council also said on Instagram that it had checked other beaches and only Coogee was known to be affected at this stage. Labor Councillor and former Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker has been elected Mayor of Randwick. Randwick Councillors formally voted Mayor Parker into office at their first Council Meeting tonight, 8 October 2024, following the general council elections last month. Mayor Parker was elected by a vote of nine to six and will serve alongside his Labor colleague, Councillor Marea Wilson, who was elected Deputy Mayor.
