New Youth Recreation Area Coming to Rushcutters Bay Park This SpringFamilies with older primary school kids and young teens will soon have another reason to head to Rushcutters Bay Park, with a brand-new recreation area specifically designed for 8 to 14-year-olds expected to open in spring 2026.
The new Rushcutters Bay Youth Recreation Area is being developed by Woollahra Council and will include a junior scooter and skate area, basketball and netball facilities, seating and landscaping.
For local families, it’s a welcome addition for an age group that can sometimes find itself caught between the playground and facilities designed for much older teenagers.
A Space Designed for 8 to 14-Year-Olds
While younger children are generally well catered for with playgrounds across the Eastern Suburbs, finding outdoor spaces that keep tweens and younger teens entertained can be a little trickier.
The new Rushcutters Bay facility has been designed specifically with this age group in mind.
Once complete, families can expect:
- A junior scooter and skate area suitable for beginner and intermediate riders
- A mini practice court
- A basketball hoop
- A netball ring
- Seating
- A drinking fountain
- Landscaping and a rubbish bin
It’s designed to be somewhere kids can practise new skills, get active and meet friends without needing to participate in organised sport.
Whether they’re learning to skateboard, improving their scooter skills, shooting a few hoops or practising their netball shots, there will be plenty of ways to get moving.
A Great Addition to Rushcutters Bay Park
One of the best things about the location is everything families can already do at Rushcutters Bay Park.
The popular harbourside park offers large grassy areas, a foreshore promenade, playground facilities and a kiosk, while Yarranabbe Park Playground is also nearby.
That means families with children of different ages will have more options in the same area. Younger kids can enjoy the playground while older siblings head for the scooter, skate or ball areas.
There is still plenty of room for picnics, dog walking, exercise, sport and simply stretching out on the grass.
The new youth recreation area will occupy just over two per cent of the total park, so the vast majority of Rushcutters Bay Park will remain available for its existing uses.
Getting Kids Outside and Away From Screens
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of the project is simply giving older kids another appealing reason to spend time outdoors.
Woollahra Mayor Sarah Dixson said the new facility would give children and families more opportunities to get outside, step away from their phones and connect with each other.
And that’s something plenty of Eastern Suburbs parents will appreciate.
Not every child wants to join a sporting club or attend a structured activity every weekend. Having free public spaces where kids can simply turn up with a skateboard, scooter or basketball gives them another way to be active on their own terms.
It also creates opportunities to develop confidence and independence as children get older.
Years in the Making
The idea of creating a dedicated youth recreation area at Rushcutters Bay Park has actually been in development for many years.
Planning dates back to 2012, with Woollahra Council undertaking research and community consultation around the need for additional recreational facilities for children aged 8 to 14.
Over the years, changes have been made to the proposed location, size and elements of the facility following community feedback.
The final design also needed to take the site’s environmental and heritage considerations into account and was approved by the Heritage Council of NSW in 2025.
Construction was scheduled to begin in May 2026, with completion expected during spring 2026.
The Fig Trees Are Staying
For anyone concerned about the park’s beautiful established trees, there’s good news.
No trees are being removed as part of the construction.
The recreation area has been designed around the existing fig trees, with particular consideration given to protecting their canopy and root systems.
Protective fencing has also been installed in areas to help prevent damage during construction, and Council has engaged a project arborist to assist throughout the project.
Easy to Reach Without the Car
The location also makes the new facility particularly useful for older children and families.
Rushcutters Bay Park is close to bus and train services, making it relatively easy to reach by public transport.
Once open, families will be able to bring along scooters, skateboards or a ball and make an afternoon of it – practise some tricks, shoot a few hoops, grab something from the kiosk or enjoy a picnic beside the harbour.
One to Look Forward to This Spring
The new recreation area fills an important gap between traditional playgrounds and facilities aimed at older teenagers and adults.
For Eastern Suburbs families with kids approaching the tween years, it could become a particularly handy place to know about.
And with free skating, scootering, basketball and netball in one of Sydney’s loveliest harbourside parks, we suspect it won’t take long for local kids to discover it.
