Understanding Your Child’s Development, Regulation, Health & Learning
By Dr Erin Hawken, Chiropractor & Founder of Home. Chiropractic Studio
As parents, we all want the same thing: for our children to be healthy, happy, and thriving.
Yet beneath the day-to-day challenges of parenting, there are four questions that come up time and time again in conversations with families. Whether your child is a newborn, a toddler, or navigating the school years, these questions are often at the heart of many parental concerns.
1. Is My Child Developing As Expected?
One of the most common concerns parents have is whether their child is reaching developmental milestones at the “right” time.
The truth is that child development is rarely linear. While milestones provide helpful guideposts, every child develops at their own pace. Some children walk early or talk later. Others excel socially while taking longer to develop physical confidence.
What’s often more important than comparing your child to others is looking at the overall trajectory of their development. Are they meeting their milestones in order, rather on a set date? Are they continuing to learn new skills? Are they becoming more confident, capable, and engaged with the world around them?
The nervous system plays a central role in this process. From movement and coordination to communication and emotional development, children rely on a constantly developing connection between their brain, body, and environment.
2. Why Does My Child Seem Dysregulated, Anxious, or Overwhelmed?
Many parents notice periods where their child seems more emotional, reactive, anxious, or overwhelmed than usual.
Often, behaviour is communication.
Children experience stress too. Busy schedules, social pressures, school demands, changes in routine, lack of sleep, and even periods of rapid growth can influence how they respond to the world around them.
Our nervous system contains two primary gears – fight/flight and rest/digest – and mood regulation amongst many other things – depends on our nervous systems ability to change effortlessly and appropriately between the two gears. These gears can be impacted by poor sleep, inconsistent routines, but also retained reflexes, history of injuries /accidents, posture and spinal function.
3. How Can I Support My Child’s Health Naturally?
When it comes to supporting children’s health, the foundations are often the most powerful.
Children thrive when they have opportunities to move, play, rest, connect, and explore.
Simple habits can make a meaningful difference:
- Prioritising quality sleep
- Encouraging daily movement and outdoor play
- Limiting screen time where appropriate
- Supporting healthy nutrition
- Creating consistent routines
- Spending quality time together
The spine and nervous system also play an important role in how children move, learn, adapt, and interact with their environment. As children grow, healthy movement experiences help provide valuable sensory input that supports their ongoing development and wellbeing.
4. What Can I Do When Learning Doesn’t Seem To Come Easily?
Every child learns differently.
When learning feels challenging, parents often worry that they are missing something important. However, learning is influenced by far more than intelligence alone.
Ensuring a child’s learning isn’t being held back by retained or abnormal pediatric reflexes is an important part of helping them reach their full potential and setting them up for future success. This assessment is an easy, fun and non-invasive process that can be done outside of school hours and gives invaluable insight into where their nervous system may potentially holding back their learning.
Sometimes the most helpful approach is to step back and look at the whole child rather than focusing solely on academic performance.
Questions such as:
- Is my child sleeping well?
- Are they moving enough?
- Do they feel confident and supported?
- Are they enjoying learning?
can often provide valuable insight into where extra support may be needed.
