Sydney is turning up the excitement this winter, with a huge lineup of free and low-cost festivals, family activities and cultural events taking place across the city over the coming months. From comedy and film to lights, books, music and art, there’s something for every family to enjoy this season.
For Eastern Suburbs families looking for affordable ways to keep the kids entertained during the cooler months, this year’s winter festival season offers plenty of opportunities for fun day trips, weekend outings and school holiday adventures.
One of the biggest highlights returning this winter is Vivid Sydney, running from 22 May to 13 June. Families can enjoy the famous Vivid Light Walk completely free, with glowing installations, projections and interactive displays transforming the city each night. There will also be free live music performances at Tumbalong Park, making it an easy and budget-friendly family evening out.
Book-loving mums and older kids can also explore the Sydney Writers’ Festival from 17–24 May, with more than 25 per cent of the festival program free to attend. The festival includes talks, workshops and family-friendly events held across Sydney, including at Carriageworks.
Families with younger children won’t want to miss the Sydney Comedy Festival Kids & Family Day, featuring free entertainment including roving performers, face painting and craft activities.
For mums looking for a fun night out, the Sydney Film Festival returns from 3–14 June, with screenings taking place across Sydney including Randwick, making it easily accessible for Eastern Suburbs locals.
Art lovers can also experience the famous Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW from 9 May to 16 August. The annual exhibition is always popular with families and visitors, showcasing incredible portraits, landscapes and contemporary artworks.
Another exciting free event this winter is the Biennale of Sydney, finishing on 14 June, with free exhibitions across several Sydney locations including the spectacular White Bay Power Station.
The NSW Government has also launched discounted same-day ticket offers for selected performances and festivals through the new Culture Station at Circular Quay. Visitors can access daily ticket deals from major events including Sydney Comedy Festival, Sydney Film Festival and Vivid LIVE.
