Bondi Art Deco Architecture Walk

Bondi is famous for its golden sands, surf culture and spectacular coastal views, but look a little closer and you’ll discover another side of this iconic suburb. Hidden among its leafy streets is one of Sydney’s finest collections of Art Deco and Inter-war architecture, making Bondi a fascinating destination for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts and anyone looking for a different way to explore the neighbourhood.

The Bondi Art Deco Architecture Walk is a self-guided experience that takes around 60 minutes, showcasing some of the suburb’s most beautiful buildings before finishing at the much-loved Bondi Pavilion.

Discover Bondi’s Architectural Heritage

The walk celebrates 100 years of Art Deco design, marking the centenary of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, the international exhibition that gave the Art Deco movement its name.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Bondi experienced a building boom, and many apartment buildings and homes were designed in the fashionable Art Deco style. Today, these buildings continue to define the suburb’s unique character.

As you wander through North Bondi, keep an eye out for the signature features of the era, including:

  • Elegant curved façades
  • Geometric patterns and decorative detailing
  • Streamlined architectural lines
  • Colourful tiled entrances
  • Distinctive windows and balconies

Each building tells part of Bondi’s story and reflects a time when seaside living became one of Sydney’s most desirable lifestyles.
