Sydney’s “funnest” tour operator, Local Sauce Tours, has launched a new family-friendly ice cream and street art tour of Newtown
Long known for its colourful street art, in recent years, Newtown has become a mecca for ice cream lovers. Along King Street and Enmore Rd, there are a range of small, locally-owned ice cream stores that have popped up over the last few years, specialising in everything from traditional Italian gelato to stretchy Turkish “dondurma”.
Now one local tour company has come up with a way to combine Newtown’s street art with its delicious ice cream options, in a family-friendly small-group walking tour.
Local Sauce Tours has been operating food, street art and nightlife tours around inner-city Sydney since 2018, including an adults-only Newtown food and street art tour. Their tours have received over 1,200 five-star reviews across Google, TripAdvisor and Airbnb.
For the school holidays, they’ve changed up the route of their Newtown tour, switching out multicultural food for ice cream and adding some family-friendly activities along the way to keep the whole family entertained.
As they explore Newtown, kids are introduced to some of Newtown’s best pieces of street art, by renowned artists including Fintan Magee, Ox King and Scottie Marsh. Experienced guides provide them with just enough information so that they can work out the stories behind the pieces, or use their imagination to come up with their own interpretations. They also get to create their own street art, by colouring in a popular piece by one local artist.
Local Sauce Tours owner, Justin Steele, said that he came up with the Ice Cream & Street Art Adventure because “firstly, everyone loves ice cream, and secondly, these small businesses have been struggling for the past couple of years. I also want to educate kids about the amazing street art we have right here in Sydney, in a fun and entertaining way.”
Eastern Suburbs Mum Sally recently joined the tour with her two daughters and said, “We all thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Justin was wonderful at engaging my daughters in the conversations around the art, and around the history and culture of the eclectic and interesting Newtown. We felt like we’d been transported out of our version of Sydney to another world. It can be difficult to please 12 & 15-year-olds, but including ice cream as part of a tour certainly helps!”
The Ice Cream & Street Art Adventure is available to book from Mondays to Fridays during school holidays and on select Saturdays. Private tours are also available.
