National Science Week is a yearly celebration of science and technology. From 12 to 20 August, you can get involved in online and in-person events, workshops, virtual tours and more.

Here are some events taking place that all the family can enjoy.

Science of nature community open day

Science of nature community open day

Learn about urban ecology with free activities for all ages at Sydney City Farm. Biodiversity experts will introduce you to local wildlife and demonstrate how to support biodiversity in the city. You can sample bush foods, make a native bee habitat, plant flower seeds, take part in a seasonal scavenger hunt and more.

Free, but bookings essential
Saturday 12 August from 10am to 3pm.

Indigenous Science Experience

This free, community open event at Redfern Community Centre is a celebration of Indigenous and Western science and technology. It highlights the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in our everyday lives.

Come along to get hands-on with a diverse range of interactive science activities accessible to all ages. Activities include yarning with Elders on bush foods and medicines, learning about customarily used seaweeds for environmental sustainability, Indigenous astronomy, and much more.

Dr Karl and Friends: Innovation and Beyond

Take a ride with Dr Karl through the past 100 years of the greatest scientific discoveries and innovations that changed our lives forever. Today’s thinkers will do the same, but how? Dr Karl will talk to 4 future-focused researchers poised to blast our futures into the stratosphere. Feed your curiosity, expand your mind and dive into the future with this evening of possibilities.

Thursday 17 August from 6:30pm to 8pm

Eureka Talks Series: Science in the Age of Fake News

Join a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges of science communication in the age of fake news. Hosted by Australian Museum Eureka Prize founder, Robyn Williams AO, this panel discussion will explore how science and fiction can be separated and whether science is being weaponised.
