Bondi Pavilion will become a meeting place for photographers, artists and curious visitors this November as the Head On Photo Festival 2026 brings almost a month of exhibitions, talks, workshops and special events to the beachfront.

Running from 6–29 November 2026, the festival is an opportunity to experience photography from Australia and around the world — and many of the exhibitions at the Pavilion are completely free to visit.

Whether you’re passionate about photography, love discovering new artists, have a teenager interested in taking photos, or simply want to see something different while you’re at Bondi, this is one to add to the November calendar.

Opening Night at Bondi Pavilion

The festival kicks off with a big Opening Night on Friday 6 November from 7pm–10pm.

The evening will bring together art, photography, music and community, with live music, drinks and bites as visitors get their first look at this year’s Head On Photo Awards exhibitions.

There will also be an opportunity to meet some of the featured photographers and curators behind the works.

One of the highlights of the night will be the announcement of the winners of the 2026 Head On Photo Awards, with an impressive $80,000 prize pool.

For anyone interested in contemporary photography, it’s a chance to see some of this year’s standout images while meeting the people who created them.

Almost a Month of Photography at Bondi

Opening Night is just the beginning.

From 6–29 November, Bondi Pavilion — affectionately known as the Pav — will host a diverse program of Head On events.

Expect artist talks, photography workshops, photobook markets and social mixers, creating plenty of opportunities to do more than simply look at the photographs.

Some events will require bookings, so it’s worth checking the program ahead of your visit.

Free Exhibitions Throughout the Festival

You don’t necessarily need a ticket or even a particular event in mind to experience Head On.

Throughout the festival, photography exhibitions will be presented daily and free of charge in the Bondi Pavilion Art Gallery and Yalagang Room.

That makes this an easy cultural stop to add to a day at Bondi.

Drop in before lunch, visit after a walk along the beach or take the kids or teenagers inside for a look at what’s on display.

Photography can be particularly accessible for younger visitors because you don’t need to understand art theory to have an opinion about an image. A photograph can immediately make you curious about a person, place or story.

Ask the kids which photograph they like most, which image they find strange, or which one they would hang on their bedroom wall.

A Great One for Budding Young Photographers

With almost every teenager carrying a surprisingly capable camera in their pocket, photography has never been more accessible.

Head On is a great opportunity for young people who enjoy taking photos to see what professional and emerging photographers are creating.

Rather than simply scrolling through thousands of images online, they can see photographs properly exhibited, discover different styles and start thinking about how photographers use light, composition, timing and storytelling.

You could even turn your visit into a little family photography challenge.

After seeing the exhibition, head outside and take a walk around Bondi. Give everyone a theme — summer, movement, colour, people, architecture or the ocean — and see what photographs they come back with.

No expensive camera required.

Photography With Bondi as the Backdrop

There couldn’t be a much better location for a photography festival.

Step outside Bondi Pavilion and you’re immediately surrounded by one of Australia’s most photographed neighbourhoods.

There’s Bondi Beach itself, the Pavilion’s architecture, surfers, swimmers, skateboards, cafés, the coastal walk and the constantly changing colours of the ocean.

It makes Head On an event that can easily become part of a bigger day out rather than something you need to plan your entire day around.

See an exhibition, grab a coffee, walk along the beachfront and perhaps take a few photographs of your own.

Add Some Art to Your November

One of the great things about living in the Eastern Suburbs is that a trip to the beach can unexpectedly become a cultural outing too.

Throughout November, Head On Photo Festival gives us another reason to wander into Bondi Pavilion and see what’s happening inside.

You can make a night of the Opening Night on 6 November, choose one of the talks or workshops during the month, or simply walk into the Pavilion and explore the free exhibitions.

And perhaps the best part is what happens afterwards.

You may step back outside, look at familiar Bondi slightly differently, pull out your phone and take a photograph you otherwise would never have noticed.

Head On Photo Festival runs at Bondi Pavilion from 6–29 November 2026, with free exhibitions open daily throughout the festival.
