Want to add a little more greenery to your garden or balcony this spring? City of Sydney residents can currently claim two free native plants for their household, thanks to a partnership between the City of Sydney and Indigenous nursery IndigiGrow.
And you don’t need a big backyard to take part. There are plants suitable for gardens, smaller spaces, sunny and shady spots, and even balcony pots.
Two Free Native Plants Per Household
The plants available through the giveaway are native to coastal Sydney, with many belonging to the endangered Eastern Suburbs banksia scrub plant community.
This native vegetation once covered areas including Waterloo, Zetland, Beaconsfield and Rosebery.
The giveaway includes young tubestock plants, which can establish quickly once planted. They’ll need regular watering during their first six weeks to help them get started.
Who Can Claim the Plants?
The giveaway is available to City of Sydney residents, with:

🏡 One registration per household
📅 Plants to be collected by Saturday 31 October 2026
Other councils are also participating in the native plant giveaway, so if you live outside the City of Sydney area, it’s worth checking whether your local council is involved.
How to Get Your Free Plants
Getting your plants is easy:
- Complete the City of Sydney online registration form.
- Keep the confirmation email — you’ll need to show it when collecting your plants.
- Visit IndigiGrow, 8–18 Yarra Road, La Perouse.
- Let staff know you’re collecting plants through the giveaway.
- Choose two eligible native plants.

Give Local Wildlife a Helping Hand
Adding native plants isn’t just about making your outdoor space look good.
Local native plants are adapted to Sydney’s conditions and can provide food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies and other local wildlife.
And small spaces can make a difference too. One balcony may only have room for a couple of pots, but lots of gardens, courtyards and balconies planted with native species can collectively create valuable habitat across the city.
