Sydney Fish Market is known for its fresh seafood and vibrant waterfront atmosphere, but it has now become one of Sydney’s most unexpected cultural destinations with the launch of Seascapes, a free arts and entertainment program running until October 2026.
Presented in partnership with the NSW Government and curated by acclaimed Australian curator Daniel Mudie Cunningham alongside Cultural Capital, Seascapes brings a diverse lineup of live performances, interactive workshops, sound installations and immersive cultural experiences to the Market’s iconic harbourfront location.
Inspired by the sea, Sydney Harbour and the unique character of Sydney Fish Market, the program features 14 artist commissions that invite visitors to engage with art, creativity and community in new and unexpected ways.
Upcoming Highlights
Gyotaku Seafood Ink Printing – Ben Devlin
Sunday 7 June 2026 | 10am – 2pm
Chef and printmaker Ben Devlin showcases the traditional Japanese art of gyotaku, a 19th-century fish-printing technique. Using seafood sourced from Sydney Fish Market tenants, visitors can help create a large-scale ocean artwork and take home their own printed masterpiece.
Song for Avida – Mark Shorter
Sunday 21 June 2026 | 11am – 1pm
Become part of a unique harbour-side orchestra by experimenting with sculptural foghorn-inspired trumpets. Visitors are invited to create sounds together during a series of fun and interactive performances throughout the day.
Opening Ceremony in the Celestial Garden – Jayanto Tan
Sunday 28 June 2026 | 10am – 12pm
This colourful workshop celebrates Indonesian culture, creativity and community through clay fortune cookies, food-inspired crafts, storytelling and delicious demonstrations of pandan crêpes and other traditional treats.
Shuck Structures Workshop – Long Prawn
Sunday 16 August 2026
Learn the art of oyster shucking in this hands-on workshop. Participants will create custom oyster shucker handles before enjoying freshly shucked oysters straight from the Market while learning about oyster culture and sustainability.
More Than a Seafood Destination
Throughout the program, visitors can experience everything from ancestral water rituals and storytelling to music-making, sculpture and creative workshops. Each artist has responded to elements that make Sydney Fish Market unique, including marine life, food, trade, ecology and the daily rhythms of the waterfront precinct.
Seascapes transforms Sydney Fish Market into a place where art, culture and community meet, offering a fresh way to experience one of Sydney’s most loved destinations.
