If you’re a fan of delicious, quick, and diverse food options, then you know how amazing food trucks can be. They bring unique flavors, foster a vibrant street food culture, and create lively public spaces where people can gather and enjoy a meal. Now, Randwick City Council is giving the community a chance to shape the future of food trucks in the area!

A Win for the Community

Food trucks offer more than just tasty meals—they help activate underutilized spaces, support local entrepreneurs, and provide convenient dining options in areas that may not have many food outlets. By expanding the locations where food trucks can operate, the Council aims to strike a balance between supporting mobile food vendors and ensuring harmony with local businesses and residents.

Under the draft Mobile Food Vending Vehicles Policy, food trucks will be able to trade more freely across Randwick City. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to secure exclusive use of designated beachside locations at Malabar Beach, Clovelly Beach, and Yarra Bay Beach on a rotational basis. Excitingly, restrictions preventing food trucks from outside the Randwick Local Government Area (LGA) from operating will also be lifted, opening the door for even more diverse culinary offerings.

Proposed Food Truck Models

The draft policy outlines two main operating models for food trucks:

  1. Itinerant Model: Food trucks can trade freely in designated car parks and streets (excluding state roads and areas within 200 meters of existing food businesses). Vendors will need a vending license and pay an annual fee of approximately $1,500.
  2. Fixed Site Model: Operators can apply for exclusive monthly use of one of the three designated beachside locations, paying a higher fee of up to $3,200 per month.

The Council is also considering a monthly food truck market trial and plans to expand the popular Eat Drink Playfood truck events to bring even more opportunities for residents to enjoy great food in a fun atmosphere.
