A Glimpse into Bronte House’s History
Originally designed by Colonial Architect William Mortimer Lewis in 1836, Bronte House was first envisioned as a grand estate on 42 acres of land at what is now Bronte Beach. However, due to financial struggles, Lewis was forced to sell before the home was completed.
In 1845, Robert Lowe, a prominent English barrister and later a NSW parliamentarian, completed the house as his ‘country residence’. Along with his wife Georgiana, they became some of Bronte House’s most charismatic early inhabitants.
Over the years, the property changed hands numerous times until the Ebsworth family purchased it in 1882, maintaining ownership for over three generations. In 1948, Waverley Council acquired the estate, ensuring its preservation for future generations to enjoy.
Recognized for its historical significance, Bronte House was added to the Australian Heritage Commission Register of the National Estate in 1978 and later received State Heritage status in 1999 under the Heritage Act 1977.
