After four months of construction, the much-anticipated playground upgrade at Ella Reserve, Malabar is now complete, Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker announced today Wednesday 13 September 2023.

“As a popular place for the kids of Malabar to gather and play, we’re thrilled to have transformed Ella Reserve Playground into an exciting and inclusive play space. Now children of all ages and abilities will be able to partake in the joy of playtime.” Mayor Dylan Parker said.

As informed by extensive community consultation in mid-2022, the play areas have been expanded to feature three new play zones, catering to the main needs of the park’s regular visitors: the inclusive play zone, the toddler and junior play zone, and the adventure play zone.

The inclusive play zone champions accessibility. Easily accessed along a direct footpath at the northern end of the playground, wheelchair users can now have fun with the brand new in-ground spinner and nest swing.

Right in the centre of the playground is the new toddler and junior play zone, where parents of young parkgoers can rejoice as the equipment is positioned in a sunken and retained area, making it easier for them to watch their small children during playtime.

The adventure play zone caters to the needs of older children. This play zone features a 2.5m slide that complements the existing landform, as well as new climbing equipment to challenge the older children who gather and play at the park.

All play areas have been built on rubber soft fall to protect young adventurers from the woes of falling over and additional sails now shade the playground to keep parkgoers safe from the heat of the sun.

In addition to the new play zones, the upgraded playground features new paving, fencing and plants, new bike racks, a drinking fountain, as well as picnic tables and informal sandstone block seating to complement the natural environment.

To add to the excitement, the community is invited to share in the joy of the new and improved playground at the official opening on Friday 22 September from 3pm-4.30pm. There will be live music, kids entertainment and free coffee and ice cream! Keep an eye on Council’s website and social channels for all the exciting details.
