Just south of Maroubra beach a new walking track has recently opened after 100 years which gives amazing access for families to do a local coastal walk in Sydney’s east and in a national park.
The Boora Point Walking track opened earlier this year and Eastern Suburbs Mums with local mum mate sans kids trialled it last weekend….and LOVED it!
With this great winter weather it’s a perfect time to do it with or without the kids. Right up until October you get the added bonus of a possible whale sighting plus amazing views all the way past the Bondi headland!
The headland also contains some historic WW11 relics from when it was used as a defensive position in WW11.
Here’s our tips:
Suitable for kids from around aged 5+ that are ok to walk at least at hour, there were loads of school age kids on the track and some bubs in carriers etc. We don’t think it would be best for anyone under 5 (sorry toddlers), there is no pram access and it’s a long journey for that age group. There are exposed cliff edges so just keep an eye on kids so they don’t venture near and are supervised by an adult at all times.
What to take:
– Water
– Snacks
– Hat, sunscreen a few layers depending on the weather forecast – it can get hot even in winter but if the wind picks up the southerly breeze can be chilly so layer up for all occasions depending on the time of year
– Good walking shoes – don’t do it in crocs or thongs the path is mostly rocks, dirt tracks with some new purpose built paths.
– Camera or fully charged mobile phone so many great photo opportunities
– Park at South Maroubra Surf Club carpark – go early as this get’s full quickly later in the morning if the surf is pumping or a nice day as a popular picnic spot. You enter the track from the southern end of the carpark.
– There are no toilets on the track so make sure you go to the loo either at Malabar or South Maroubra.
– Allow time: it took two pretty fit mums one hour one way, but with kids allow a bit longer, also you currently can’t walk back from Malabar unless you back track so either arrange for a pick up at Malabar, get a bus back from Anzac Parade Malabar or call an Uber. Randwick Council have started working on a western walking track so you will eventually be able to do a full circuit.
– Remember this is a national park so no pets can be taken
– The track is closed when the rifle range is open so please check in advance of your planned walk to see the alerts before visiting, some weekend days can be closed at certain times. Just search for Boora Point Walking Track under the ALERTS section at www.nationalparks.com.au
