Garage sale trail

When was the last time you actually saw the back of your garage? Or opened the kids’ cupboards and wondered how they accumulated quite so many toys, clothes, books and sporting gear?

If your home could do with a good clear-out, November is giving us the perfect excuse.

Garage Sale Trail 2026 is taking place across two weekends — 7–8 November and 14–15 November — and families across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs can get involved by holding their own garage sale, joining forces with neighbours or simply heading out in search of some brilliant second-hand bargains. Garage Sale Trail

From Bondi to Bronte, Randwick to Maroubra, Coogee to Clovelly and everywhere in between, this is a great opportunity to open those cupboards, tackle the garage and give all the perfectly good things we no longer use a second life.

Start With the Great Eastern Suburbs Declutter

We all have that cupboard.

The one filled with things we’re definitely going to sort out one day.

Then there are the kids’ bedrooms, wardrobes, storage cages, garages and shelves containing things nobody has touched for years.

Garage Sale Trail is a good reason to finally get everyone involved.

Go room by room and ask a very simple question: Do we actually still use this?

Look for kids’ clothes that no longer fit, toys they’ve outgrown, books they’ve finished, scooters and bikes that are now too small, unused sporting equipment, kitchen appliances, homewares, furniture and all those mysterious boxes sitting at the back of the garage.

Instead of throwing good things away, put them aside for someone else to discover.

Get the Kids Involved

This is one household job that can actually become a fun family activity.

Give each child a box and ask them to find things they’ve grown out of or no longer use.

They might be reluctant to part with that toy they haven’t touched since 2023 — until you explain that they can have their own little section of the garage sale and make some pocket money.

Let them set prices, make signs and arrange their toys, games and books.

On the day, they can become the shopkeepers.

It’s a surprisingly good way to introduce children to money as well. If they sell an old toy for $10, suddenly they start to understand that the things we buy have value even after we’re finished with them.

And there’s another lesson in there too: we don’t always need to buy new.

Don’t Have a Garage? You’re Still Invited

This is particularly relevant in the Eastern Suburbs, where plenty of us live in apartments.

Despite the name, you don’t actually need a garage to participate.

Apartment buildings, schools, community groups and neighbourhoods can all get involved. You could organise something in your building’s common area with permission, team up with a friend who has a suitable space or get several neighbours together for a larger street sale. Garage Sale Trail

In fact, getting several households involved can make the day much more interesting.

Imagine a whole street or apartment building having a clear-out at the same time. More sellers mean more things to browse, which gives shoppers a much better reason to visit.

Make It a Neighbourhood Event

One of the nicest things about an old-fashioned garage sale is that it’s actually quite social.

We spend so much time buying and selling things through apps and online marketplaces that we can forget how enjoyable it is to put a table outside, meet people from around the neighbourhood and have a chat.

Why not ask your neighbours whether they’re interested too?

Someone may have baby equipment they’ve finished with. Another family might have surfboards and sporting equipment. Someone else could have furniture, vintage clothing, plants, records, books or kitchenware.

Before you know it, you’ve created your own little Eastern Suburbs market.

Garage Sale Trail registration is free, and registered sales can appear on the event’s national map so shoppers can find them. Garage Sale Trail

Go Treasure Hunting Around the East

Of course, you don’t have to sell anything.

You can simply go shopping.

Garage Sale Trail describes the event as Australia’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt, and that’s probably the best way to approach it.

Rather than heading to the shopping centre, grab the kids and spend a morning exploring local garage sales.

The official map allows shoppers to search by suburb or postcode, filter by the types of things they’re looking for and save favourite sales to create their own route. Garage Sale Trail

You never quite know what you’ll find.

There could be a great bike for one of the kids, boxes of children’s books, LEGO, vintage clothes, furniture, gardening equipment, records, toys, kitchenware or something completely unexpected.

That’s part of the fun.

Give Everyone $10 and See What They Find

Here’s one way to turn it into a family adventure.

Give everyone a small budget — perhaps $10 or $20 each — and see who can find the best second-hand treasure of the day.

The kids might discover a board game or toy. Teenagers can hunt for vintage clothes, books or vinyl. Mum and Dad might come home with a plant pot, piece of furniture or something for the kitchen.

Finish with lunch or a trip to the beach and you’ve turned bargain hunting into a family day out.

Just establish one important rule before leaving home:

Don’t bring home more stuff than you’ve just cleared out!

Spring Cleaning With a Reward at the End

Holding a garage sale can also put a little money back into the family budget.

Garage Sale Trail reports that the average household sale made $761 in 2025. Of course, every sale will be different, but it demonstrates how much value can be sitting unused around our homes. Garage Sale Trail

You could put the proceeds towards a family outing, Christmas, a holiday or something everyone has been saving for.

Or let the children keep some of the money they make from selling their own belongings.

Suddenly cleaning their bedroom becomes a much more attractive proposition.

It’s Good for the Environment Too

There’s another good reason to get involved.

Garage Sale Trail is ultimately about keeping useful things in circulation for longer.

The organisation says participants collectively extend the life of more than 730,000 items each year, keeping them in use rather than sending them to landfill. Garage Sale Trail

It’s an easy sustainability lesson for children because they can actually see it happening.

The bike they’ve outgrown isn’t rubbish — it’s a bike another child can ride.

The box of picture books isn’t rubbish — another family can read them.

The dress hanging unworn in the wardrobe isn’t rubbish — somebody else might love it.

And that works both ways. Buying something second-hand means giving an existing product another life rather than automatically purchasing something new.

So, Eastern Suburbs — What Could You Clear Out?

Maybe this is finally the weekend to open the garage.

Pull everything out, get the kids involved, knock on the neighbour’s door and see whether they want to join you.

And if selling isn’t your thing, make yourself a coffee, grab the kids and head out for a morning of treasure hunting around the Eastern Suburbs.

There is something satisfying about seeing an item you no longer need disappear down the street with someone who’s genuinely excited to have found it.

Less clutter in your house, a little extra money in your pocket and perfectly good things getting another life.

That sounds like a pretty good weekend to us.

Garage Sale Trail takes place across 7–8 and 14–15 November 2026. This year is also the final event organised by the Garage Sale Trail Foundation after 16 years, making 2026 a particularly good year to get the neighbourhood involved. Garage Sale Trail
