NSW Rail Museum

All aboard! If you have a little train lover in the family, clear some space in the calendar because Thomas the Tank Engine is rolling into the NSW Rail Museum this August for two extended weekends of family fun.

Taking place at the NSW Rail Museum in Thirlmere, this year’s music-inspired Day Out With Thomas gives young train fans the chance to get up close to some much-loved characters while enjoying plenty of hands-on activities.

Kids can climb into Thomas’ driver’s cab, hop aboard Toby the Railmotor, take on a fun scavenger hunt and enjoy face painting. There’s plenty to keep little trainspotters entertained while families explore the museum and its impressive collection of locomotives.

For an extra-special experience, families can upgrade their tickets to include a 40-minute steam train journey from Thirlmere to Buxton. The ride offers the chance to experience the sights, sounds and excitement of travelling behind a real steam locomotive – and to see James chugging through the countryside.

A more relaxed experience for families

The event also offers sensory-friendly sessions in the mornings, along with a dedicated quiet space on site. This gives families the flexibility to explore the event at a pace that works for them.

Located in Thirlmere, around a 90-minute drive from Sydney, Day Out With Thomas also makes a fun excuse for a family day trip to the Southern Highlands.

ESM Tip

If you’ve got a budding trainspotter in the family, consider adding the steam train ride upgrade. The 40-minute journey between Thirlmere and Buxton adds a memorable railway adventure to the day – and seeing James steaming through the countryside is sure to be a highlight for Thomas fans.
