If you’ve ever been curious about matcha or wanted to experience an authentic Japanese tea ceremony, this special event at Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra is the perfect opportunity.
As part of Multicultural Health Week, Wellness Through Matcha: Discover Japanese Tea Culture invites the community to explore the traditions, flavours and wellbeing benefits of one of Japan’s most treasured cultural practices.
Whether you’re already a matcha lover or simply looking to try something new, this free event offers a relaxing afternoon of learning, mindfulness and tea tasting.
More Than Just a Cup of Tea
Matcha has become increasingly popular around the world, but there’s much more to it than the vibrant green lattes found in cafés.
During this engaging session, participants will discover:
- The differences between English tea, sencha and matcha.
- How to recognise high-quality matcha.
- The health and wellbeing benefits of drinking matcha.
- Practical tips for preparing and enjoying matcha at home.
You’ll also gain an insight into the cultural significance of tea in Japan and how the simple act of preparing and sharing tea can encourage mindfulness, relaxation and connection.
Experience a Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony
One of the highlights of the afternoon is a Japanese tea ceremony demonstration, where you’ll learn about the centuries-old traditions behind this elegant practice.
The tea ceremony is much more than preparing a drink—it’s a ritual centred on harmony, respect, tranquillity and being fully present in the moment.
The session concludes with a matcha tasting, giving participants the chance to experience the rich flavour and aroma of authentic Japanese matcha.
Celebrating Multicultural Health Week
This event forms part of Multicultural Health Week, an annual celebration that recognises the many cultures that enrich our communities while promoting health and wellbeing through shared experiences.
