Stargazing

Looking for a unique family night out this winter? This National Science Week, Centennial Park is hosting an unforgettable evening that combines live orchestral music, astronomy and the beauty of Sydney’s night sky.

On Saturday 15 August, The Planets – Concert and Stargazing invites families to enjoy a performance by the Sydney Youth Orchestra’s Symphonic Wind Orchestra, followed by an evening of guided stargazing with astronomers and giant telescopes—all set against the peaceful backdrop of Centennial Park.

Stargazing

A Concert Inspired by the Night Sky

The afternoon begins with a live outdoor concert featuring music inspired by space and the stars.

The Sydney Youth Orchestra’s Symphonic Wind Orchestra will perform a spectacular program including:

  • Mars and Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s The Planets
  • Doctor Who: Through Time and Space
  • Music from The Mandalorian
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The combination of cinematic favourites and Holst’s iconic orchestral suite makes this a fantastic introduction to classical music for children, while movie fans will love hearing familiar themes performed live.

Stargazing

Explore the Night Sky

As the sun sets over Centennial Park, the evening transforms into an astronomy adventure.

Families will be introduced to the wonders of the night sky by Dr Luke Barnes from Western Sydney University before members of the Sydney City Skywatchers help visitors explore the stars and planets through powerful telescopes.

Whether it’s your child’s first time looking through a telescope or you’re a keen stargazer yourself, it’s a wonderful opportunity to discover the universe together.

Campfires, Picnics and Winter Vibes

One of the highlights of the event is its relaxed atmosphere.

Bring a picnic blanket or camping chair, pack your favourite snacks and settle in for an afternoon and evening surrounded by nature. As darkness falls, campfires will help keep everyone warm while adding to the magical winter ambience.

It’s the perfect excuse to unplug from screens and enjoy quality family time outdoors.

Celebrate National Science Week

The Planets – Concert and Stargazing is one of several events taking place across Sydney for National Science Week, encouraging children to explore science in fun and engaging ways.
