National Science Week

If you’ve ever wanted to learn the basics of 3D design and printing, National Science Week is the perfect time to give it a try. Darling Square Library is hosting a hands-on 3D Print a Planet workshop where participants aged 16 years and overcan design their very own planet and have it professionally 3D printed.

Please note: This workshop is only suitable for participants aged 16 years and older.

Design Your Own Planet

Using the free 3D design software Blender, you’ll start with a simple sphere before transforming it into a unique planet. Add realistic features such as craters, mountain ranges, deep canyons or swirling storm systems, or let your imagination run wild by creating an entirely fictional world.

Throughout the workshop, experienced instructors will guide you through every step of the design process in Darling Square Library’s fully equipped Makerspace.

What You’ll Learn

Participants will gain practical skills in:

  • Basic 3D modelling (CAD) using Blender 3D
  • Preparing digital files for 3D printing
  • Using the Bambu X1 3D printer
  • Understanding the creative possibilities of digital fabrication

No previous experience is required, making this an excellent introduction to the world of 3D design and printing.

Take Home Your Creation

At the end of the workshop, your planet will be prepared for printing. Each participant will receive one 3D printed model (up to a three-hour print time), which can be collected from the Level 1 Library Loans Desk approximately 1–2 weeks after the workshop. Participants will be notified by email when their print is ready for collection.
