Sydney’s biggest fun run is back! On Sunday 9 August 2026, around 90,000 runners and walkers will make their way from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach for the iconic 14km City2Surf. It’s a day filled with incredible community spirit, colourful costumes, inspiring personal achievements and plenty of entertainment along the course.
Even if you’re not taking part, City2Surf is a fantastic event for families. Kids love spotting the creative costumes, making colourful signs and cheering on the runners as they tackle one of Sydney’s most famous courses.
If you’re looking for the best places to watch, here are five family-friendly viewing spots across the Eastern Suburbs.
1. Double Bay – Great Atmosphere and Easy Coffee Stop
Double Bay is one of the first Eastern Suburbs locations on the course, making it perfect if you want to catch the faster runners before the crowds become too dense.
There are plenty of cafés nearby where parents can grab a coffee while children wave homemade signs and cheer from the footpath. You’ll also see everything from elite athletes to runners dressed as superheroes, animals and movie characters.
Perfect for:
- Families with younger children
- Coffee lovers
- Seeing runners while they’re still fresh and smiling
2. Rose Bay – Cheer Before Heartbreak Hill
Rose Bay is one of the most exciting places to watch because runners are preparing for the toughest climb of the course.
Your encouragement can genuinely make a difference as participants head towards the famous Heartbreak Hill. Bring some cowbells, make encouraging posters or simply clap loudly—it all helps!
Nearby parks also provide plenty of space for children to move around between waves of runners.
Perfect for:
- Motivating runners
- Families wanting extra space
- Picnic morning
3. Heartbreak Hill, Vaucluse – The Most Exciting Viewing Spot
If there’s one place every spectator should experience at least once, it’s Heartbreak Hill.
This legendary climb is where runners really need encouragement. The atmosphere is electric, with spectators lining both sides of the road, live entertainment and thousands of people cheering every participant—from elite athletes to first-time walkers.
Children love shouting encouragement and handing out high-fives (where permitted).
Perfect for:
- Maximum excitement
- Fantastic community atmosphere
- Inspiring kids about perseverance
4. North Bondi – The Final Push
By the time runners reach North Bondi, they know they’re almost there.
This section is full of excitement as participants dig deep for their final kilometre. The ocean views make it one of the most scenic parts of the course, and the energy from the crowd is contagious.
If you have family or friends running, this is often one of the best places to surprise them with a final burst of encouragement.
Perfect for:
- Spectacular views
- High-energy atmosphere
- Great family photos
5. Bondi Beach Finish Line – Celebrate Every Finisher
Nothing compares to the atmosphere at Bondi Beach.
The finish area is filled with music, celebrations and emotional moments as runners cross the finish line after completing the famous 14km course.
Children love watching the excitement, spotting funny costumes and celebrating with family members who have completed the run. Afterwards, you can enjoy Bondi Beach, visit one of the many cafés or simply soak up the festive atmosphere.
Please note that the finish precinct becomes extremely busy, so arrive early if you plan to watch from here.
Make It Extra Fun for the Kids
Turn spectating into an activity by encouraging your children to:
- Create colourful cheering posters at home.
- Count how many runners are wearing costumes.
- Spot superheroes, animals and inflatable outfits.
- Start a loud “Go, Go, Go!” cheer with other families.
- Celebrate every participant—not just the fastest runners.
The smiles from exhausted runners who hear children cheering are often priceless.
Plan Ahead
With major road closures across the Eastern Suburbs, public transport is the easiest way to get around on race day. Roads close progressively from early morning and reopen throughout the afternoon, so allow extra travel time if you’re heading to one of the viewing locations.
Whether you’re supporting a friend or simply soaking up one of Sydney’s most iconic annual events, City2Surf offers an unforgettable day out for the whole family. Pack some snacks, bring your loudest cheer and join thousands of spectators as they help carry runners all the way to Bondi Beach.
