One of the most breathtaking highlights of Vivid Sydney is back for 2026, with the hugely popular Vivid Sydney Drone Show returning for its longest season yet.

This year’s show, titled Star-Bound, will light up the skies above Darling Harbour across 22 performances over 12 nights, creating an unforgettable experience for families visiting the city during Vivid Sydney.

Taking place above the waters of Cockle Bay, the free drone spectacular combines cutting-edge technology, music and storytelling as 1000 illuminated drones move together in perfect synchronisation across the night sky.

Designed as a celebration of universal connection, the show explores the repeating patterns found throughout nature, from plants and animals to galaxies and the solar system itself. Families can expect giant glowing waves, spiralling Fibonacci shells, star formations and stunning nebula-inspired visuals floating high above the harbour.

One of the most mesmerising moments of the performance recreates the phenomenon of a murmuration, where thousands of starlings appear to dance and shift together in the sky. The drones mimic these flowing formations before transforming into ever-changing cosmic displays, all set to an emotional orchestral soundtrack blended with pulsating electronic music by acclaimed Australian composer Antony Partos.

For mums looking for a memorable family night out during Vivid Sydney, the drone show is one of the best free events on the program. Children will be amazed by the giant glowing shapes overhead, while parents can enjoy the atmosphere of Darling Harbour as the city comes alive with lights, music and entertainment.

The Vivid Sydney Drone Shows are held every Sunday to Wednesday night during the festival at 7:30pm and 9:30pm, except for Sunday 7 June. Each session features the same Star-Bound performance, allowing families to choose the night and time that best suits their schedule.

As always, arriving early is recommended, with Darling Harbour expected to attract large crowds throughout the Vivid season. Families can combine the drone show with dinner, a stroll through the Vivid Light Walk or a visit to nearby attractions for a full evening out in the city.
