Have you been thinking about adding more greenery to your backyard or even your balcony? The City of Sydney is giving away 1,000 free trees, giving local residents the chance to create their own little green haven at home.
Whether you have a spacious backyard, a compact courtyard or a sunny balcony with room for a large pot, there will be a range of tree sizes to suit different spaces.
What’s Available?
Residents can choose from a selection of small, medium and large trees, including:
-
Deciduous trees – lose their leaves in autumn and regrow them in spring
-
Evergreen trees – keep their leaves year-round
-
Selected citrus and bay trees
Each household can collect up to two free trees, with a maximum of:
-
1 bay tree
-
1 citrus tree
You can view the full list of tree species available on the day here: www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/tree-giveaway
Council staff will also be available on the day to offer planting advice and tips on keeping your new tree healthy and thriving — whether it’s going in the ground or into a large balcony pot.
Why Plant a Tree?
By taking part in the City of Sydney free tree giveaway, you’re helping support the city’s goal of increasing local tree canopy to 27% by 2050. More trees mean:
-
Cooler homes and neighbourhoods
-
Cleaner air
-
More shade for families
-
Better habitats for birds and wildlife
It’s a simple way to make a long-term difference while beautifying your own space.
