A common question we often asked is when a child should have their first orthodontic assessment. As a parent, you might remember that you didn’t meet your orthodontist before your teens, however much younger children can benefit from an earlier orthodontic consult and in some cases initial treatment.

The right age starts here

The Australian Society of Orthodontist recommends children should visit an orthodontist for an assessment between the ages of 8-10 years old. At this age, there is a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth, and the orthodontist will be able to assess your child thoroughly and identify any functional issues while their teeth and jaws are still developing. If your child is over 10, there’s no need to worry. It’s never too late to book their first orthodontic visit, and we see older children and adults every day.

Early treatment or Phase 1

Early orthodontic intervention is commonly referred to as phase 1 with the objective to prevent further problems developing as the jaw grows and to minimise the need for extensive treatment later. Not every child needs early treatment and will depend on the child’s individual problem, teeth position and bite. Often, an orthodontist will monitor your child’s growth and development and recommend treatment only when the timing is right for the best dental and facial results.

8 signs you child may benefit from seeing an orthodontist at an early age (7-10 years)

  1. Crowded, crooked or misplaced teeth.
  2. Protruding teeth
  3. Early, late or irregular loss of baby teeth
  4. Underbite or overbite
  5. Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face.
  6. Thumb sucking beyond the age of 5.
  7. Difficulty in chewing or biting
  8. Mouth breathing

Benefits of orthodontic treatment

One of the key benefits of early diagnosis is identifying the ideal time for treatment to begin. An early orthodontic assessment helps determine how and when a child’s orthodontic concerns should be addressed for the greatest benefit. In certain cases, early treatment can prevent the need for surgical intervention later, after the face and jaws have finished growing.

What will happen at my initial consultation?

During your child’s initial assessment, the orthodontist may take an x-ray of their teeth and facial bones to help understand how their smile is likely to develop as they grow. This helps the orthodontist identify any existing concerns and talk you through a treatment plan that addresses your child’s current needs, while also giving you an idea of what may be required in the future.

Many factors can influence a child’s dental development, but an early assessment helps guide you and ensure you’re well prepared every step of the way.  If you think your child needs or would benefit from early orthodontic treatment, seek a consultation with a specialist orthodontist.

Why your family should see an orthodontist

Orthodontists are the experts at straightening teeth and correcting bad bites. They begin as dentists before completing an additional three years of full-time study to become registered specialists. This extra training gives orthodontists in-depth knowledge of the newest technologies and the best practices to safeguard the health of your child’s teeth.
