When the mercury rises, there’s nothing better than escaping the heat with a refreshing dip close to home. Luckily, the Woollahra area is blessed with some of Sydney’s most beautiful harbourside swimming spots, calm beaches and family-friendly reserves — all perfect for cooling down on a hot summer’s day.

Whether you’re chasing gentle waters for little ones, shady picnic spots to linger through the afternoon, or a more active way to enjoy the harbour, this part of the eastern suburbs has something for everyone. From snorkelling in crystal-clear coves to floating pools with postcard views, these local favourites make it easy to stay cool without venturing far.

Pack the swimmers, sunscreen and a picnic rug, and explore our pick of five top spots in the Woollahra area to keep cool this summer — all tried, tested and loved by local families.

1) Snorkelling in Camp Cove

Camp Cove Beach is one of those special spots locals love – calm, beautiful and perfect for little adventurers. Tucked beside Sydney Harbour National Park near Watsons Bay, it offers gentle paddling conditions ideal for young kids.

While the harbour views above water are stunning, it’s what’s below the surface that really excites families. Pop on a snorkel and explore the rocks where you might spot octopus, cuttlefish, frogfish and even the occasional seahorse.

After your swim, climb the nearby stairs and wander part of the South Head Heritage Trail towards Hornby Lighthouse, or cool down with an ice cream from the Camp Cove kiosk and relax on the sand.

2) Have a ball at Watsons Bay

Why not combine keeping cool with a bit of fun exercise? Watsons Bay Baths hosts social water polo games every Sunday morning, welcoming players and spectators alike.

If ball sports aren’t your thing, the baths themselves are a wonderful place for a swim. This fully accessible harbourside tidal enclosure is loved by all ages and features floating pontoons, seating and sweeping harbour views. It’s also home to Australia’s first deep-water wheelchair access to a tidal harbour pool.

After your dip, grab an ice cream from nearby Tea Gardens Café or enjoy fish and chips on the grass at Robertson Park.

3) Chill out in Parsley Bay Reserve

Parsley Bay Reserve truly ticks all the boxes: calm swimming enclosure, shaded playground and grassy picnic areas. It’s a spot where you can arrive early for a peaceful swim and easily stay all day.

The recently upgraded playground is a hit with kids of all ages, while the shallow, still waters are perfect for confident toddlers and young swimmers. The iconic suspension bridge adds to the charm, offering beautiful views across the bay.

Please note: Due to Sydney Water works, the Parsley Bay Reserve car park and vehicle access via Horler Avenue are closed until late 2026. Pedestrian access remains available via Fitzwilliam Road and The Crescent.

4) Dip into Murray Rose Pool

Formerly known as Redleaf Pool, Murray Rose Pool is a favourite summer escape for locals – and for good reason. A short walk down is rewarded with a stunning harbourside tidal pool overlooking Double Bay.

Kids love the floating pontoons for lounging and jumping in, while parents appreciate the wave-free water and wrap-around boardwalk that makes access easy. There’s also a small strip of beach for sandcastle building and a grassy area perfect for picnics.

Feeling peckish? The kiosk serves ice creams, snacks and hot food for an easy lunch by the water.

5) Kayaking in Rose Bay

For families who like to stay active, kayaking in Rose Bay is a brilliant way to cool off and explore the harbour. You can hire kayaks, double kayaks or stand-up paddleboards from a couple of local operators.

Tingira Memorial Park is a popular launch spot with calm waters and a lovely beach. For something quieter, Rose Bay Park (below the police station) offers a sandy, dog-friendly foreshore with shaded picnic areas. From here, confident paddlers can reach Shark Island or Milk Beach within about 20 minutes, soaking up iconic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House along the way.

There’s even a small shaded playground nearby, making it a great all-round family outing.

Don’t let the heat slow you down this summer. Head to one of these gorgeous eastern suburbs spots, cool off, and make the most of those long sunny days by the water — just remember to slip on a hat, slop on sunscreen, stay hydrated and keep sun protection top of mind while you’re having fun. ☀️💦
