Bondi has a brand-new landmark—and it’s one that celebrates the strength, resilience and trailblazing spirit of one of our own. Today, the Bondi community gathered at South Bondi Beach to unveil a stunning bronze statue of world champion surfer Pauline Menczer, paying tribute to the hometown hero whose story continues to inspire generations.
For local families, especially young girls dreaming big, this moment marks a powerful reminder that world-class talent can rise from right here on our shores.
Celebrating a True Bondi Icon
Pauline Menczer is the only world surfing champion to come from Bondi, securing her 1993 world title without the backing of a sponsor—a rarity in professional sport and a testament to her grit and determination. Beyond her achievements on the waves, Pauline has become a strong advocate for equality in sport, using her voice to push for better recognition and opportunities for women and girls.
The bronze sculpture, created by artist Cathy Weismann, brings Pauline’s spirit to life on the headland where her journey began. The work was made possible thanks to the dedicated, community-driven Pauline in Bronze campaign, which rallied locals and supporters worldwide to honour her legacy.
A Proud Day for Waverley
The statue’s unveiling is more than a celebration of Pauline’s surfing accomplishments—it’s a proud moment for Bondi and the wider Waverley community. It stands as a permanent reminder of resilience, equality and the power of community to uplift and honour its heroes.
Whether you’re passing by on the school run, taking the kids for a beach play, or enjoying a coastal walk, make sure to stop at South Bondi and say hello to our newest local legend.
Pauline’s story began here—and now her legacy will continue to inspire here, too.
