Every year, Australians come together for R U OK? Day, a powerful reminder to check in with the people around us and start conversations that can make a real difference. This year’s R U OK? Day takes place on Thursday, 11 September 2025, with the theme: “R U OK? – A conversation could change a life.”
The day encourages all of us to notice the signs when friends, family members, colleagues, or neighbours might be struggling, and to reach out with a simple but meaningful question: “Are you OK?”
Why it matters
Mental health challenges can affect anyone, and often people keep their struggles hidden. By asking the question and truly listening, we can provide support, help reduce feelings of isolation, and encourage those doing it tough to seek further help.
How to ask R U OK?
The campaign provides four simple steps to guide the conversation:
-
Ask R U OK? – Pick the right time and place.
-
Listen – Take what they say seriously and give them your full attention.
-
Encourage action – Suggest simple next steps like talking to a GP, counsellor, or someone they trust.
-
Check in – Follow up and show you care over time.
What you can do
-
Start with your family, friends, and colleagues – sometimes just being there is enough.
-
Share resources from the official R U OK? website and social media to raise awareness.
-
Get involved in community events, morning teas, or school programs that highlight the importance of looking out for each other.
Support is always available
If you or someone you know needs extra support, you can reach out to Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), or speak with a trusted health professional.
This R U OK? Day, let’s remind each other that we’re stronger together—and that one caring conversation could change a life.
