Stretch out the season with the annual South Maroubra Ocean Swim.
South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club hosts one of the final Sydney swims of the season, with all entry fees contributing to the purchase of vital lifesaving equipment required by their volunteer lifesavers.
This year’s event features three race courses, 500m, 1km and 2.5 km. Each course will commence and end at the south end of the beach.
The first event for the day is the 500m swim for ages 8 years and above, followed by the 1km and 2.5km swims open for 12 years of age and above.
Cash Prizes are on offer for the fastest male & female in each of the races:
- $250 for the 2.5km
- $100 for the 1km
- $50 for the 500m (only 8-14 year-olds can claim).
Prizes from Switch, Recoverie, Look, Delfina, Budgy Smuggler and Engine are on offer for 1st, 2nd and 3rd for all ages. While the 500m event is open to all participants, prizes will only be provided to children aged 8 – 14 years of age.
There are distances on offer for all abilities and they are all a simple circuit around the buoys in front of South Maroubra Surf Club.
Maroubra Beach is an open beach with sifting banks, gutters and the occasional rip as with any beach, all making for an exciting swim for all abilities.
At 10 am the 2.5km course heads along the Malabar Headland before the marker to turn north. The next turn is in line with Maroubra SLSC, where swimmers traverse back towards South Maroubra before a final marker and heading to shore.
The 1km swim at 9.15 am is for ages 13 years and up. A rectangular course heading out from the south end of the beach, then a short swim north before turning back towards the surf club.
Finally, a perfect 500m course is set for beginners and speedsters alike, with the minimum age set at 9 year old. This is a great distance for those taking on their very first ocean swim.
