After working and travelling around the world as a costume and theatre designer for 15 years, I needed a change. As a result, I decided to open the Hunt 4 Hope Op Shop in 2018. 100% of our profits go to Huntington’s Australia who help families and those affected by Huntington’s Disease. As well as consciously providing affordable secondhand goods and customer service to cater for all socio-economic needs, the shop has become a community space where people feel safe and enjoy the ambient and colourful environment and this gives me joy.
My daily motivation is knowing I am making a contribution to help families and those impacted by Huntington’s Disease and to create greater awareness. My sister in-law suffered from this genetic and degenerative disease and my passion for doing this work has not waivered since opening.
Where and how long have you lived in Sydney’s east?
I grew up in Coogee and have lived in the area my whole life.
Three words that describe what it’s like to live in the eastern suburbs?
Fresh, Vibrant, Supportive
How many children?
I take care of my 14 year old niece with my brother, whose mother recently passed away after a long battle with Huntington’s Disease. I am humbled to be able to step in and be this alternative mother figure for her.
Favourite Park?
Centennial Park is the perfect retreat to be active, be in nature and to relax any day of the week, with friends or family.
Favourite Beach?
Coogee beach for the white sand and grassy areas to have a picnic in the sun.
Favourite Coffee Spot?
Ek’sentrik Café in Maroubra for the brownies and spinach pie.
Favourite date night place?
Maybe Frank in Randwick always has a fun atmosphere and great food to enjoy with a glass of wine.
Where in the east have you yet to explore and would like to go?
I have yet to attend the new Maroubra Beach markets. There is so much potential for the community and stall holders to benefit from this event.
What would you like to see improve in the eastern suburbs?
Additional aid, mental health care and housing for those in financial need.
Favourite Local Shop?
The TriShine Yoga Studio is where I spend a lot of time after work to balance the day. They accommodate for all ages and skills as well as targeted pregnancy classes for mums to be.
Favourite wet weather location?
The Ritz cinema is always a sure-fire option to spend the day when it’s rainy outside.
Favourite Local family Weekend Activity?
I discovered the La Perouse to Little Bay walking track during Covid and love to take family and friends on this walk to explore nature and its history.
Work or SAHM?
As a business owner I dedicate most of my working week to being in the shop to serve the community and manage the array of generous donations we receive in a daily basis. I prefer to engage with people face to face than online.
Motherly advice?
Teach your kids the lessons you wish you were taught at their age
