The most dangerous local street intersection in Randwick City is set for a safety overhaul after Randwick City Council secured state government funding for safety upgrades across the City.

Between 2019 and 2024 there were 26 collisions at the southern intersection of Anzac Parade and Franklin Street, located near the Malabar town centre, injuring 27 people – more than any other local road in Randwick City.

The $4.7 million Transport for NSW grant will fund the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker said that the funding will allow much-needed works to proceed, creating safer streets for Randwick City locals and visitors alike.

“I’m really pleased that Council has been awarded additional funding to commence this essential work. This intersection has been an accident blackspot for too long.

“The project will ensure greater safety for motorists, pedestrians and bike riders, as well as the school children attending nearby schools like Matraville Sports High, Chifley Public School, Malabar Primary and St Andrews Primary School.

“The crash rate at this intersection is clearly unacceptable, so I’m happy we can now crack on with the work quickly thanks to additional funding and the design work Council has already completed.”

The grant is part of an $11.5 million fund, allocated to Council through Transport for NSW, for four projects to address road safety and traffic concerns in the Randwick City area. The other projects are:

  • Speed cushions at the intersection of Bunnerong and Little Bay roads in Chifley
  • Implementation of the Kensington and West Kingsford Local Area Traffic Management Scheme
  • A roundabout at the intersection of Maroubra Road and Flower Street in Maroubra (to be implemented after safety improvements at the intersection of Maroubra Road and Mons Avenue, Maroubra)

The projects will be implemented alongside other road and transport infrastructure projects across the City, such as the Paine Reserve shared path in Randwick and the Malabar Road raised crossing north of Duncan Street in Maroubra.

Council will commence community consultation on the projects before construction begins.
