Motherhood is often described as a joyful and magical time, but for many new mums it also comes with moments of overwhelm, worry, and unexpected thoughts that can feel unsettling or hard to talk about. In fact, almost 100% of mothers experience vivid, sometimes frightening thoughts about something happening to their baby. They might picture the pram rolling away or worry about accidentally hurting their child. These kinds of thoughts often appear suddenly and can feel incredibly distressing. They’re called perinatal intrusions, and while they’re extremely common, they’re rarely discussed.

A new study led by researchers at UNSW Sydney is aiming to change that. We’re currently recruiting mothers who gave birth between 1 and 6 months to take part in a study exploring these thoughts and how they relate to maternal wellbeing. Participants will be reimbursed up to $75 AUD for their time.

The study is part of a larger international research program looking at the biological, psychological and social factors that shape mental health in the perinatal period. It’s one of the first projects of its kind and will contribute to a better understanding of how to identify and support mothers who may be at risk of ongoing mental health problems.

What is the study about?

Perinatal intrusions are unwanted, often distressing thoughts or mental images about the baby being harmed, either accidentally or intentionally. These kinds of thoughts are very common and are not linked to behaviour that goes beyond the thoughts and is acted upon. However, they can be deeply distressing, and many parents don’t realise that others experience them too.

This study is designed to help us understand how common these thoughts are, how they affect mothers’ mental health, and what factors might make some mothers more susceptible. We are particularly interested in how things like hormone sensitivity, thinking styles and social support influence these experiences.
