Randwick City Council is seeking feedback from local residents and community members on an exciting new proposal to upgrade Snape Park in Maroubra. The council’s plans aim to improve the park’s facilities and cater to the growing needs of local sporting clubs, park-goers, and the wider community.

Snape Park is a beloved district-level park that serves as a hub for local recreation and sport. It’s regularly used by the Randwick Petersham Cricket Club and Maroubra Lions Rugby League, among other groups. To continue enhancing the park’s role in the community, the council is planning to roll out a major upgrade in two stages, with Stage 1 focusing on a new indoor training facility, and Stage 2 addressing the park’s amenities, landscaping, and more.

What’s Happening in Stage 1?

The first stage of the upgrade will see the construction of a state-of-the-art indoor training facility, which is set to become a valuable resource for cricket and rugby league training. Funded by a combination of Randwick City Council and a $1 million Federal Government grant, this indoor space will be purpose-built to provide year-round training opportunities for local sports clubs, regardless of weather conditions.

Located near the existing outdoor cricket nets, this new facility will occupy an underutilized area of the park. The council is ensuring that the design takes into account both the environment and the local community. Specialist consultants in areas such as accessibility, acoustics, traffic, and heritage are involved to ensure the project is well-integrated and mindful of the needs of residents.

Key Features of the Indoor Training Facility:

  • Synthetic Flooring: The facility will be equipped with synthetic flooring to allow for all-weather training, providing a reliable space for athletes year-round.
  • Low-Impact Location: To minimize visual and noise impacts, the facility will be nestled among existing trees in a low-lying area of the park, preserving the natural landscape and greenery.
  • Accessibility and Connectivity: Conveniently positioned next to the outdoor cricket nets, the facility will be easily accessible from both Snape Street and the park’s car park, with pathways linking the spaces.
  • Sustainability Features: The facility is designed to be energy-efficient, with natural ventilation, filtered light, and sustainable water management practices. There are also plans to incorporate solar panels and battery storage.
  • Aesthetically Inspired by Nature: The building will feature materials and colours drawn from the natural environment, with potential for Indigenous artwork to celebrate the connection to Country.
  • Durable and Low-Maintenance: The facility will be constructed with robust materials to ensure longevity and minimize maintenance costs, with a façade that combines solid and translucent elements to reduce visual mass and blend seamlessly with the park’s surroundings.

What’s Coming in Stage 2?

Once Stage 1 is completed, the focus will shift to Stage 2, which will overhaul the park’s outdated amenities. This phase will see the construction of a modern all-in-one amenities building to replace the existing kiosk, toilets, and changerooms. The surrounding area will also receive upgrades, including improved pathways, parking, and landscaping, making the entire park more accessible and user-friendly for visitors.

Stage 2 is currently in the planning stages, and construction will follow further community consultation in the coming years. Your input is essential to ensure that the final design meets the needs of everyone who uses Snape Park.
