Randwick Council has endorsed a bold $15 million concept plan to redevelop the iconic Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC)—with plans set to go on public exhibition in the coming weeks for community feedback.

This major upgrade will deliver a modern, accessible and inclusive facility that meets the growing needs of the club’s 1,400+ members while supporting beach safety, youth programs and broader community wellbeing.

Why the Upgrade Matters

Founded in 1906, Maroubra SLSC is one of Australia’s oldest surf clubs, and it continues to play a vital role in public safety. With Maroubra Beach considered one of the more hazardous beaches in Sydney, the club’s work is crucial—members perform around 285 rescues each year, one of the highest rates in New South Wales.

Beyond lifesaving, the club has evolved into a community hub, hosting activities that support both physical and mental well-being for all ages. In the past three years, club membership has grown by over 25%, highlighting the urgent need for facilities that can keep up with the demand. The current building is no longer fit for purpose, prompting the Council’s commitment to a complete redevelopment.

What’s Planned in the New Design

  • New changerooms designed for comfort, safety and accessibility

  • A lift to support inclusive access for all members and visitors

  • Expanded equipment storage to house vital lifesaving gear

  • Upgraded training facilities to support education, patrols and surf sports

  • A modern community function space for events, meetings, and social connection

The design reflects input from club members and is focused on blending functionality with community connection.

What’s Next?

The concept plans will soon be available for public exhibition, giving residents and stakeholders the opportunity to have their say. Following feedback, the project will progress through development and tender stages before construction begins.

This redevelopment isn’t just about bricks and mortar—it’s about supporting a vital service that saves lives, strengthens community ties, and creates a safe space for all beachgoers. Stay tuned for exhibition dates and your chance to shape the future of one of Maroubra’s most cherished institutions.
