There’s more time to explore, discover and get growing at Randwick Community Nursery, which is now open on the first Saturday of every month, from 9am to 3pm.
The Saturday opening gives local families a weekend opportunity to browse Australian native plants, ask for gardening advice and choose something to grow at home.
Located in Kingsford, the nursery has been established for more than 50 years. It specialises in local provenance plants and other native species suited to the soils and climate of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
Whether you have a backyard, a balcony or space for a pot by the front door, there’s plenty of inspiration for a small family gardening project.

Make It a Family Outing
A nursery visit can be a lovely way to spark children’s curiosity about nature. There are different leaf shapes, colours and plant sizes to discover, and plenty of questions to ask along the way.
Try these simple activities as you explore together:
- Play plant detective. Challenge the kids to find three different leaf shapes, the smallest leaves or a plant taller than they are.
- Go on a colour hunt. Look for different shades of green, colourful stems and any flowers in bloom.
- Watch for wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds and insects visiting the plants, observing quietly without disturbing them.
- Choose a plant together. Ask nursery staff to recommend something suited to your garden or pots, available sunlight and gardening experience.
- Encourage questions. Which plants grow well on a balcony? Why do some have tiny leaves? Let the children’s curiosity guide the visit.
Remind children to ask before touching plants and to leave flowers and leaves growing for everyone to enjoy.

A Fun Screen-Free Activity
Exploring the nursery offers a relaxed break from screens, giving children something hands-on to discover with the family. Looking closely at plants, spotting insects and choosing something to grow can make an ordinary Saturday feel like a small adventure. There’s no need for a complicated plan—just wander, chat and see what catches their attention.
Take Home a Growing Project
If you buy a plant, involve the children in choosing its spot and learning how to care for it. Ask nursery staff about the right pot, potting mix, drainage and watering before heading home.
Younger children might enjoy naming their plant and making a label, while older kids can measure its growth or keep a garden diary. It’s a simple project that gives the family something to watch and care for together.
