A majestic fig tree on Quail Street in Coogee has been spared from removal following renewed negotiations between Randwick Council and its insurer, Statewide Mutual. The decision comes after widespread community concern and efforts by council staff to find a solution that would allow the tree to remain in place.

The mature fig, one of several lining Quail Street, was originally set to be removed after a local resident reported damage to a nearby fence. Council had advised that without insurance coverage for potential future damage or injury, it had no option but to cut the tree down.

However, the decision sparked immediate concern from locals, who rallied to defend the tree — a landmark in the neighbourhood known for its shade, beauty and ecological value. Their campaign gained further traction after coverage by A Current Affair, which drew wider attention to the issue.

This week, Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker announced a welcome change of course.

“Like many in our community, I was saddened by the idea of losing such a significant tree,” Mayor Parker said. “Trees like this fig provide shade, habitat, and beauty in our suburbs — they are part of what makes our neighbourhoods so special.”

“Thanks to the continued efforts of our staff, ongoing discussions with our insurer, and the passionate voices of our community, we’ve now reached a point where the tree can remain in place.”

Council confirmed that it has secured partial insurance cover for any future damage related to the tree, reducing the risk to a level that no longer requires its removal. Some light pruning may still take place, but the tree is now safe from the axe.

“This is a great outcome that balances community sentiment with responsible risk management,” Mayor Parker said. “I want to thank our residents for their advocacy and our staff for working hard to make this possible.”

The win is being celebrated across Coogee, as a symbol of what can happen when residents speak up for the spaces they care about.
