Looking for a unique midweek outing that feeds your soul and sparks conversation? Head to the Art Gallery of NSW for an extraordinary evening where poetry and art intertwine in a live, immersive experience—perfect for art enthusiasts, creatives, and anyone craving a night of inspiration.

This free Poetry Month event, presented in partnership with Red Room Poetry, brings together some of Australia’s most celebrated poets and artists for a one-of-a-kind event titled “Go Beyond the Frame”.

What to Expect

The program features live readings of poetry inspired by artworks in the gallery—known as ekphrastic poetry—performed right in front of the pieces that sparked the words. You’ll hear:

  • Two new premieres by acclaimed author and musician Nardi Simpson and award-winning poet Eunice Andrada.

  • Readings by some of Australia’s most powerful creative voices, including Barrina South, Ali Jane Smith, Omar Sakr, Safdar Ahmed, Richard Tipping, Claudia Nicolson, and Salote Tawale.

  • The evening is hosted by Nicole Smede from Red Room Poetry.

The event begins on the Ground Floor and then moves to Gallery 7 on the Lower Floor of Naala Badu, part of the newly transformed AGNSW.

 Why You Should Go

Whether you’re a poetry lover or simply looking to experience the Gallery in a new and moving way, this event is a wonderful chance to engage with art through the lens of spoken word. It’s also a great excuse for a creative night out—solo or with friends.
