As we head closer to April, we are reminded that the cold season will soon be upon us, and with that brings viruses and germs and the dreaded flu, or even COVID.  But did you know that things in your home could be contributing to sick house syndrome and making you ill?

  • Respiratory issues:  congestion, aggravated asthma or allergies, sinus infections
  • Cognitive issues: foggy thinking, sleep disturbance, frequent headaches
  • Mood changes:  feeling agitated, down or depressed
  • Physical symptoms: stomach upset, muscle aches, fatigue, rashes, sore throat

Jim’s Cleaning Group, CEO, Ali Olmez, explained that even though you clean regularly, you could still be exposed to toxins, pesticides, gases, mites, viruses, bacteria and mold in the home.

Jim’s Cleaning Group has been a trusted Australian household name since 1994 with some 1500 franchise businesses across the country offering cleaning, carpet cleaning, mobile car detailing, blind cleaning, window cleaning and pressure cleaning services.

“Scientists are concerned by the rise in the number of bacterial infections and other illnesses that are becoming increasingly resistant to treatments,” Olmez said.

“Unfortunately many dangers are lurking around the home and it is more important than ever to ensure that our homes are treated with a deep clean at least once a year and that we are constantly staying vigilant and aware of the risks.”

Homes are a hotbed for bacteria, viruses and microbes

“The kitchen and bathroom are the hotspots of bacteria and microbes in any home. These rooms of the house are the most germ-infested because they contain many high-touch surfaces that can be loaded with germs. However, don’t forget another high-touch surface: your phone,” Olmez said.

“In relation to high touch surfaces, yes, viral and bacterial transmission and infection can occur between the surface and your fingers and those with weakened immune systems can really get sick due to the bacteria in these places of the home.

“This is why it’s important to disinfect surfaces regularly. We were very vigilant during the COVID era, but we haven’t kept up with those good habits because the paranoia has passed. They are, nonetheless, good habits to instill in your own household.

“Bacterial and viral infections will start to rise as we head into the colder months. Besides the flu, Strep A and respiratory viruses can cause cold-like symptoms which can take some time to recover from.

“Respiratory virus infections can be very serious in infants and the elderly and even lead to hospitalisation.”

Dangerous products

“Besides microbes making us sick while we’re at home, another way we are potentially putting our

Health at risk is through household chemicals and pesticides. I know weeds and slugs are pesky but

try to avoid using chemical pesticides when maintaining your garden,” Olmez said.

“Symptoms of pesticide exposure can include headache, nausea, abdominal cramps, tightness in the chest and wheezing. In severe cases it can even lead to seizures or loss of consciousness.

“In addition to pesticides, many people use a whole lot of household chemicals without really thinking that they’re chemicals, when in effect, daily items like disinfectants, surface cleaners, deodorant sprays, bleach and nail polish are all chemically based. As far as possible, try to look for natural based products to minimise your exposure to such chemicals.

“Using natural based cleaning products is an easy way to avoid accidental poisoning at home. Opt for natural based cleaning products wherever possible. Jim’s Cleaning Group has a range of cleaning products that are not only effective but also safe for the whole family. The products are made from a natural plant based biodegradable formula, free from caustic ingredients and soaps, making them ideal for homes with pets and children.

“Our products include: all-purpose spray,  bathroom/toilet cleaner, hard floor cleaner, carpet and fabric cleaner, pet stain and odour cleaner, and oven, cooktop and BBQ cleaner. They are safe for regular use in the home, around children and pets and won’t damage the environment once disposed of. Our cleaning products are even ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers.”

Allergens and mould

“Besides microbes making us sick while we’re at home, another way we are potentially putting our health at risk is through allergens like mold, dust mites and cockroaches,” Olmez said.

“A mild dust mite allergy might cause a runny nose or watery eyes, but severe symptoms could trigger asthma attacks.

“If you or a family member are affected by dust mites, remove upholstered furniture, drapes and curtains and use anti allergen encasements for your pillows and mattresses.”

Ventilation

“Ventilation plays a key role in helping to move air flow around and getting fresh air into your home,” Olmez said.

“Old and unclean air can continue to circulate and move particles of viruses and other nasty things around the home.   Open more windows and let light in.    Fresh air and light help to circulate the air and also freshen up spaces.”

A clean house equals a safer home

“The greatest takeaway is that even though you have a regular cleaning schedule and you’re regular with vacuuming, mopping and cleaning, it doesn’t mean that your house is bacteria and germ free. Taking added precautions in cleaning high touch surfaces and difficult to get to areas can be helpful in preventing viruses and bacteria from spreading amongst family members,” Olmez said.

“On top of that, it is important to keep in mind that many homes are stocked full of chemical products that could be dangerous to your health, so it’s best to use natural products if possible.”
