Ghost in The Rocks Returns for Four Huge Nights of Halloween Fun
Sydney is getting ready for its biggest Halloween celebration yet, with Ghost in The Rocks returning for four nights from Thursday 29 October to Sunday 1 November 2026.
Billed as Australia’s Biggest Halloween Street Festival, the event will transform one of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhoods into a sprawling open-air Halloween playground filled with giant creatures, lights, live entertainment, food, music and plenty of costumes.
And the best part? Entry to the street festival is FREE.
This year Halloween falls on a Saturday, and organisers are preparing for a particularly big weekend. More than 250,000 people attended in 2025, with over 300,000 visitors expected across the four nights in 2026.
George Street Is Closing for Halloween
On Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, George Street through The Rocks and the Overseas Passenger Terminal precinct will close to traffic from 7pm until midnight.
For those five hours, the streets belong to the Halloween crowds.
With traffic removed, visitors will be able to wander through the precinct on foot, exploring the historic streets and laneways as live music, DJs, lighting installations and Halloween experiences take over The Rocks.
It promises to be quite a sight.
Expect giant tentacles emerging from buildings, six-metre spiders looming over laneways and colourful lighting transforming the sandstone streets into something completely different from the neighbourhood families know during the day.
Halloween Fun for Families by Day
For Eastern Suburbs families thinking of heading into the city with younger kids, the important thing to know is that Ghost in The Rocks isn’t only about late-night Halloween celebrations.
There will be family programming during the day, giving kids an opportunity to dress up and experience the atmosphere before the precinct takes on a darker personality after sunset.
Families can wander through The Rocks, explore the Halloween installations and make a day of it before the evening crowds arrive.
And costumes are definitely encouraged.
Witches, ghosts, skeletons, superheroes, vampires, monsters or something completely original — Halloween is one day when almost anything goes.
Then The Rocks Changes After Dark…
As daylight disappears, so does the family-friendly daytime atmosphere.
The lights change, the music turns up and The Rocks becomes a very different place.
Across the precinct, visitors can choose between different experiences spanning food and drink, horror, nightlife and Halloween classics, with live street performances remaining free.
Organisers describe the transformation as rebuilding a piece of Sydney for four nights rather than simply placing a collection of Halloween events into the neighbourhood.
Considering the setting, it’s difficult to imagine a more atmospheric place for it.
The Real Ghost Stories Behind The Rocks
What makes Ghost in The Rocks particularly interesting is that its stories aren’t simply invented for Halloween.
Each year, the festival draws inspiration from the history, legends and ghost stories that have surrounded The Rocks for generations.
For 2026, the story centres around Anne Kirkman and one of Sydney’s most famous historic pubs, The Hero of Waterloo on Lower Fort Street.
According to the story associated with the hotel, Anne kept rooms there from 1849. Over the generations, tales have emerged of a piano mysteriously playing during the early hours of the morning — only to stop when somebody approaches.
Anne follows Thomas Warne, who was murdered in The Rocks in November 1844 and became known to Ghost festival audiences as The Tormentor.
Whether you’re a believer in ghosts or simply love a good Sydney story, the history of The Rocks provides a pretty convincing backdrop for Halloween.
Free to Walk In
One of the biggest attractions of Ghost in The Rocks is that you don’t need a ticket simply to experience the festival atmosphere.
Entry is free across all four nights, and the live performances taking place on the streets are also free.
Visitors can arrive by train, ferry or on foot and explore the precinct at their own pace.
Organisers say the only real dress code is a costume — so this might be the year for the whole family to get involved.

Families travelling from the Eastern Suburbs can take the light rail or train towards Circular Quay, followed by a short walk into The Rocks. Ferries into Circular Quay are another fun option if you’re coming from a location with convenient ferry connections.
With potentially hundreds of thousands of visitors expected across the four nights, allowing some extra travel time would be wise.
One for the Halloween Calendar 🎃
Halloween seems to get bigger in Sydney every year, but Ghost in The Rocks takes things to another level.
Historic sandstone buildings, narrow laneways, real ghost stories, enormous spiders, giant tentacles, costumes and thousands of people wandering through a traffic-free George Street should create an incredible atmosphere.
For families, we’d suggest heading in earlier to enjoy the daytime programming with younger children. Families with older kids and teenagers might want to stay a little longer and watch The Rocks transform as darkness falls.
Ghost in The Rocks runs from Thursday 29 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, with Halloween falling on Saturday 31 October. Entry to the street festival is FREE.
