The skies above Bondi Beach will burst into colour on Sunday, 14 September 2025 (11am – 4pm) when the much-loved Festival of the Winds returns.
This iconic event is Australia’s biggest kite-flying celebration and attracts kite makers and flyers from across the country. Organised by Waverley Council in partnership with the Australian Kite Flying Society (AKFS), it promises a spectacular day of creativity, community, and joy.
Incredible Kite Displays
The highlight of the festival is always the kites. From giant animals and geometric designs to delicate handmade pieces, Bondi’s skies will transform into a moving art gallery. Professional kite flyers from the AKFS will put on shows throughout the day, creating breathtaking aerial displays against the famous beach backdrop.
Get Involved
Families are encouraged to join the fun:
-
Bring your own kite and join the public flying zones.
-
Buy one on the day from one of the many kite stalls in Bondi Park.
-
Make your own at a special kite-making workshop and watch it soar above the sand.
The Magic of Bondi
The first Festival of the Winds was held in 1978 at Bondi Pavilion, and the tradition continues today as the pavilion once again becomes a hub of activity, with music, food, and art alongside the kite flying.
Getting There
With road closures and limited parking, it’s best to leave the car at home. Extra buses and trains will be running, so plan your trip at transportnsw.info.
Whether you fly your own creation or simply relax on the sand watching the skies, this festival is one of Sydney’s most colourful days out for families.
