Does your child love to draw and let their imagination run wild? Here’s a fantastic opportunity to see their artwork featured in one of Sydney’s biggest cultural celebrations – the Sydney Lunar Festival 2026 – and it’s open to children aged 5 to 12!

The City of Sydney is inviting young artists to create and submit their most colourful and creative horse drawings to celebrate the Year of the Horse. Selected artworks will be displayed outdoors in Haymarket, where thousands of festival visitors can admire them.

It’s a wonderful way to get your kids involved in the arts, boost their confidence, and take part in a special community celebration.

🎨 What Makes a Great Entry?

The theme is Year of the Horse, so the drawing should feature a bold, imaginative horse that:

  • Celebrates the Lunar New Year

  • Is cheerful, adventurous, and full of personality

  • Could be dancing, singing, juggling or doing something fun

  • Might be holding a lantern or red envelope

  • Stands out and can be seen clearly from a distance

Kids can name their horse and write a one-sentence description of its special talents – perfect for sparking their storytelling skills too!

📏 Drawing Details

  • Use A3 paper in portrait orientation

  • The horse should be the main focus – background details aren’t necessary

  • Use any materials: crayons, pencils, paint or even digital tools

  • AI-generated images are not allowed – we’re celebrating real creativity!

🖼️ What Happens If Your Child’s Drawing is Chosen?

If selected, your child’s drawing will be:

  • Displayed outdoors at the Sydney Lunar Festival 2026

  • Printed on a custom t-shirt for them to keep

  • Included in a special Year of the Horse sticker sheet

  • And your family may even be invited to the Festival’s media launch

📅 Important Info

  • Entries close: Monday 26 May 2025 at 5pm (Sydney time)

  • You can submit up to 2 drawings per child

  • A photo of each drawing (taken on your phone is fine) needs to be uploaded with the entry form

  • Keep the original drawings safe – they may be needed later

  • Successful entries will be notified by 13 June 2025
