As Christmas approaches, it’s the perfect time to get crafty and spread the festive cheer by creating your own Christmas wreath at home.
This fun and festive activity is a crowd pleaser, providing a creative outlet for families during the holiday season.
Research from Creative Australia shows that 84 per cent of Australians recognise the positive impacts of arts and creativity, with Christmas being the perfect time to get stuck in.
TAFE NSW floristry teacher Wendy Delve has the simple tips to create a unique Christmas wreath that shows your personal creative flair.
“Designing your own Christmas wreath is such a simple and fun holiday activity. Get your friends and family together and make an afternoon of it, I promise it will get you in the Christmas spirit!” says Wendy.
“Before you get started, have a think about what foliage you want to use. I recommend Australian natives because they dry well and give an awesome rustic look. Any wreath will ultimately end up with dried foliage, so choosing natives will ensure it looks great for a longer time.”
“Take a look at what you have in your own back yard or make some purchase from your local florist. Something like eucalyptus, pine, gum nuts and banksias tend to work really well for a Christmas wreath.”
“For your base, you can usually buy a metal or cane circular wreath from a craft store, like Spotlight. Or sometimes a florist will sell pre-made vine wreaths. It really depends what sort of style you’re going for.”
“And that’s where the fun begins! Once you have your foliage and base, how you want to decorate it is up to you. Perhaps you want the whole wreath covered in gorgeous flowing leaves, or maybe you prefer something more minimalist with just the top section decorated.”
“Either way, make sure you have something to fix your decorations on with, like twine, ribbon or wire , so it all stays in place. You can also use the ribbon as a decorative element, if you choose something in a complementary colour.”
“However you design your wreath will reflect your own Christmas spirit, so get involved and have fun!”
